Bothered and bewildered...

The kids in the Summer Drama Camp were watching some movie in the Green Room as I walked through just now. I don't know what they were watching - definitely not "The Lord of the Rings" - but they were talking about Aragorn. Yesterday I was talking to a kid (aged about nine) who was just finishing reading the latest Harry Potter book. I love it when fandom hits the young.
This afternoon they are putting on a play for their families and friends - "Murder at the B&B", a murder mystery set in 1932, and largely written by the students. There seem to be rather a lot of suspects. They were dressing up in costume for it this morning and they looked great. Their parents will be pleased, I think.
I was frustrated just now by acronyms.... This happens because I am almost totally ignorant of what's on TV - except for Smallville. I do occasinally make forays into exciting new venues like televized yoga or the Weather Channel. I'm just too busy to watch much. Show that my friends are into make an impact on my consciousness, especially if they are slashy, so I know what TS and SG1 stand for, for example.
It isn't just with TV it happens - people on LJs were talking about PoA for a while before I twigged to fact that the acronym had a Harry Potter context: The Prisoner of Azkaban. (My favourite of the books, too.) But

Of course I am perfectly happy with the acronyms I use all the time, like GK, QP, DK, etc., or LSH, DD, FF, UXM in the world of comics; or SV for "Smallville", PotC for "Pirates of the Caribbean" and LFG for "Lord Fucking Gorgeous".
Such is fandom, and so, I suppose, it will ever be. Maybe the bottom line is: if I don't know, I don't need to know.
But... being me, I get curious.

Date: 2003-08-08 10:51 am (UTC)It's oodles of fun and my favorite reality show, because the contestants have to work in order to win.
I watched the premiere of The O.C. last night, but I'm still as likely to confuse it with a discussion of original characters as to assume the person's talking about the FOX tv show.
I am sometimes tempted to define my terms the way I do at work: Last night's episode of The Amazing Race (hereinafter "TAR")was great! But then I think everyone will laugh at me for doing that, including myself. *g*

Date: 2003-08-08 11:13 am (UTC)We both realize that I could have just asked you in the first place. But... I really thought that if I thought about it for a while, I would twig to what it was. Not so.

That does sound like fun!
As for OC - yes, it's doubly confusing when the acronym means something else too - as is often the case. There just aren't enough letters in the alphabet.
