Irreplaceable
There was an empty place in the Hub, where once something important had been.
While he was away, Gwen had done a magnificent job refurbishing the place - something Jack should have done long ago, he realized belatedly. She had carefully saved all his memorabilia of the Doctor: the 3D glasses, the old televisions, and even, in his tin box, the faded photograph of the Doctor and the Titanic.
It wasn't Gwen Cooper's fault that the Hand was gone, living its own life in another universe with Rose. (Beautiful Rose!)
Jack sorely missed the Hand. Beautiful, brilliant, irreplaceable, and his.

Date: 2008-07-29 02:33 am (UTC)I did not know much of what it was about, as I have not seen all that you have seen, but my praise above was not meant to stand in place of my complimenting your content -- no, when I praise construction, it is high praise and stands by itself.
Now, tell me: Rose now has the Doctor's hand? And... oh, crap, I need to see these!!!

Date: 2008-07-29 02:48 am (UTC)As for what it was about... if you want me to, I can tell you what happened to the Hand in the last episode of Doctor Who series 4, "Journey's End" if you like. Major, major spoiler, of course.
Rose now has the Doctor's hand?
In a manner of speaking. [g] It's a little more complicated than that.

Date: 2008-07-29 03:07 am (UTC)Yes, I would like to know. I don't mind spoilers, in most instances. I actually usually need to know some basic structure beforehand in order to be able to follow an episode fully; you already know this, or maybe you knew and forgot. So, yeah, if you feel like telling me all about it... that would be delightful.
"It's a little more complicated than that" -- a little! Uh-huh!
(I wrote my comment at about 10:30; why you still up, lady? You should be in bed!! [g] )

Date: 2008-07-29 01:56 pm (UTC)I do know. But since I almost always personally prefer "no spoilers", I always ask before telling - not just with you, with everyone. General policy. (Occasionally forgotten and regretted.) So I don't tell without asking first, even when I believe the person won't mind.
In Doctor Who episode 4x12, "The Stolen Earth", the Doctor was shot by a Dalek just as he was reunited with Rose. Captain Jack and Donna rushed the Doctor into the TARDIS and, dying, he started to regenerate. That was the surprise cliffhanger ending, and it certainly was a jaw-dropping surprise. Imagine the suspense we were in for a whole week. I loved it.
So episode 13, "Journey's End", began with the Doctor regenerating but not changing. He used the regeneration to heal himself as himself and put the excess energy into the Hand, which was in its jar by the TARDIS console.
As the story went on, the Doctor was captured by the Daleks, along with his companions. Donna was trapped inside the TARDIS. The Daleks were trying to destroy it. Jostled and under attack, Donna touched the Hand, which set up a flow of energy linking her to the Hand and creating from it a whole new version of the Doctor, almost identical to the original, but with some different characteristics - only one heart, and a tendency to talk like Donna. She in turn took on some Time Lord characteristics.
By the end of the episode, Donna's memory of the Doctor was erased and her enhanced abilities were suppressed. But there was still this extra Doctor walking around, who had eradicated the Daleks. The Doctor didn't want him around, and accused him of genocide. Being still the Doctor with all the Doctor's memories, though mortal, the second Doctor was of course in love with Rose. So the Doctor (er, the Time Lord Doctor) suggested that he should go back to Rose's universe with Rose to live with her there. The other Doctor liked the idea, and though Rose seemed to prefer the Time Lord (at least until the other Doctor kissed her), she ageed. So they went back to her world to live happily ever after.
So - the fate of the Hand? It turned into a person just like the Doctor, only human and living in another universe.

As for my explanation on "Journey's End" - heh: it was hard to be brief and coherent when the plot was so packed with stuff.
