fajrdrako: Ninth Doctor - Christopher Eccleston ([Doctor Who])

More fannish fun: I watched The Music of the Spheres, which was shown at the Royal Albert Hall today, with the Doctor Who Proms 2008. I particularly liked the beginning: seeing the Doctor writing music on the floor. That had such endearing charm.

It's all just one of those charming British traditions.

And accompanying it - on the BBC site - an interview with Russell T Davies, and of course I watched this evening, and voted. At last they same more Sound of Music songs, but I particularly enjoyed the section in which they were singing Andrew Lloyc Weber songs. Jayme sang "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar, Elicia sang "Memory" from Cats, and Janna sang "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" from Evita.

My love of musical theatre is riding high right now.

Oi, talk about delightful and downright fabulous. I am quietly proud to be one of perhaps many, perhaps few Americans who know about the Proms. Not to mention knowing about Doctor Who. Endearing charm, indeed. I love British traditions. I may be a closet monarchist myself -- I know I accused you of being one, recently, then we both pulled back from the "closet" part of it, as you do nothing closeted, of course! hee

Musical theater is indeed one of the precious wonders of modern civilization. Aahhh.

As soon as I said that, I got the goofy idea in my head about someone finding a new Egyptian tomb with wall paintings showing the tale of some ancient Egyptian version of Pajama Game or something like that [g]. Yeah, totally goofy. And also so incredibly ripe for playing with it.

You do remember Neil the Horse, done by Arn Saba...? "Making the world safe for musical comedy"? Of course you do!

Of course I remember Neil The Horse. I also have happy memories of having lunch with Arn Saba once, at San Diego Comic Con. What fun that was!

Lovely! He must be as interesting in person as his comic was, no?

I told you once upon a time about how I got myself one brief moment of comic letterpage fame. I was so swept up in Neil the Horse (was going through a very bad time, and it was just what I needed: lightness and happiness and silliness, and I did indeed have a crush on Mlle. Poupee)... well, I decided to try to pretend to be someone else and I wrote a "secret admirer" letter to her under an assumed name. And it got printed! And Arn wrote a reply to it in French, in Poupee's voice! I was flying for days. Ah, happy memories.

That comic was such fun. I don't recall whether Arn Saba was interesting (he must have been) or even what we talked about, but I do recall that he was very nice. It was a lovely lunch.

Can't remember if I ever had a letter in that comic. I don't think so. I think you trumped me there!

There was a review in today's Pittsburgh Post Gazette about a show being put on by one of the city's theater organizations. Its title is something like "Too Far to Reach." Its three main characters: Narcissus; the son of Tantalus; and Sisyphus. Brilliant! And, yes, it is musical. The three leads sing arias. I wish I'd thought to write it. Then again, how much angst could one playwright take, huh? This might have been too much of a good thing!

It sounds intriguing. I must check online for reviews.

Yes, it's here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7527232.stm

I didn't put it into my posting because I couldn't remember where I'd seen it. Then your questions triggered my sleepy memory. Thanks!

I haven't had a chance to listen to the music yet; I'm looking forward to it.

I love the sense of playfulness of all of this. Daleks at the Albert Hall! If the British ever had the reputation of being stuffy, I think they've shucked it by now.
