John Barrowman talks...

I'm sitting here smiling. I just watched the videos put up on YouTube by a fan called dspothotspots, to whom I owe hugs and chocolate. She was at the reading John Barrowman and his sister Carole did a few days ago - right before San Diego Comic Con - in Los Angeles. Only they didn't do a reading, they did a question and answer sessions because "we like to talk".

He talked about the CERNE Torchwood radio show, and the next series of Torchwood, and his coming album - which sounds terrific. Among other things, it will contain "I Am What I Am". Carole told about how he had her ambushed by a Dalek on the Torchwood set.

And a bit that I loved beyond words. Barrowman said:

We don't see Captain Jack as openly gay. I kind of wish we'd move on from calling ourselves gay, and don't get me wrong, I'm proud to be a gay man... I'm proud to play Captain Jack, the whole omnisexuality of him, and the fact that he has a relationship with Ianto but still fancies other people. The British public really don't care, I mean, they look at it as just another relationship.

I love fans and their inventiveness. And their delight in sharing. And certain well-known people's incredibly kind inclinations to participate in their fans' joy. I think the world is a nice place, sometimes... right now is one.

(My cats knocked my wristband vortex manipulator off my desk while I was gone one day, and I don't know where it ended up when they finished playing with it. If any of them shows up at your place with it, looking flustered, you will let me know, right?)

I'm glad John keeps in mind that Jack isn't just gay. He's omni. :-) We forget that at our peril! XD

I was pleased that John made the point that Captain Jack isn't gay; looking at series 2, I heard a lot of fans saying 'they're writing him as if he's gay now' because his only obvious relationship was with Ianto. (Not that he wasn't showing interest in Gwen, or flirting with others - were they ignoring that?) Since I love Jack's omnisexuality, I was delighted that John made a point of it. Even more, he made the point that 'quaint categories' are unnecessary and should be dropped. The whole passage (I only quoted part) is well worth listening too, if you didn't already - not just is it a very good point, in my opinion, he's also funny and dirty enough to make his sister cover her ears.
