Highlight of the day: going to Dairy Queen with [livejournal.com profile] maaseru.

I made a souffle for supper. At one point, needing something from a low cupboard, I just squatted down to get it - no problem. I couldn't believe it. Had a little trouble getting back up, but I was amazed by the careless ease of doing something I couldn't even imagine a week ago.

Also saw How do you solve a problem like Maria?, the second last results show. My favourite (Janna) is still in the running. Good! And I loved the way Andrew Lloyd Weber teases John Barrowman. Funny, funny, funny!

For the second week in a row, I remembered about Maria at 8:31! And it doesn't look like CBC is repeating any of them. Sigh.

I don't think I taped last night's Maria, either. The people still in the running are Janna, Jayme and Elicia. Marisa was the one eliminated last night.

Excellent news! You're improving amazingly fast now. Obviously you're on the exponential part of the healing curve...

(I spent the day weeding and reseeding my lawn. Couldn't have done that two months ago. I was actually able to carry an almost-full garbage can with my bad arm without even thinking about it.)

I hope so! I want to walk quickly again, and far.

So glad to hear about improvements to your arm, too! My arm is much more pain-free, and I am only occasionally reminded it was damaged.

I have never made a souffle. This should probably be remedied. Recipe?

And yay! for how well you are doing with The Foot. :)

I'm at work now, and my favourite simple souffle recipe is at home. I'll try to remember to send it to you tonight.

Yes: I'm happy about the Foot.

Looking forward to the souffle recipe. We have an inexplicable family tradition of mispronouncing it as "sou-fel". Yes, intentionally. *g* Not that I think one has ever made an appearance at a family mealtime. V. strange.

PS Once again: Yay Foot! :)

PPS How's the MCR listening going? Latest obsessive repeat track for me is Demolition Lovers from Bullets - "And I would drive on to the end with you, a liquor store or two keeps the gas tank full" - very Bonnie and Clyde! I am falling for their earlier stuff, which I found too heavy (and screamy!) when I first listened to it. Keep meaning to email you with options for further sharing...

Looking forward to the souffle recipe.

Here you are!

Soufel... heh. Inexplicable pronunciation that maybe scared the dish away from your table?

I totally love, love, love the MCR music which I have been listening to - thank you again - and I'm listening guiltily, because I should only be listening to music in French right now. But... making exceptions. [g] Got The Black Parade CD out of the library today just because I could! Love the mini-poster in it: half Sgt. Pepper, half Doctor Who.

The recipe:

~ ~ ~

Cheese Soufflé

This is a basic soufflé recipe. Once mastered, almost endless variations are possible.

1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups hot milk
1/2 lb cheddar cheese, grated
4 eggs, separated

Blend butter, flour and salt together in a saucepan. Add hot milk and cook, stirring, until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and blend in cheese.

Stir a little of the cheese mixture into the egg yolks, then pour into the saucepan and mix thoroughly.

Beat egg whites until stiff and fold gently into the egg and cheese mixture.

Turn into a buttered soufflé dish and bake at 375 degrees F for 35 minutes. Serve immediately.

Serves 4.

My notes: By 'endless variations' they mean 'throw in 1/4 or more of whatever vegetables strike your fancy'. Mushrooms are a nice addition. Or bacon. Or asparagus.

Any flat-sided casserole dish will do to bake it in, it doesn't really have to be a souffle dish. They say 'serve immediately' because 'immediately' is when it's all fluffy and high and looks really impressive. But it tastes good even if it isn't eaten immediately.

"Serves 4" isn't specifically accurate. I find it serves 3 if no one's terribly hungry.

Oops, just realised I never said thank you for the sou-fel recipe. Bad me!

It looks possible, in that it's not TOO much bother. :) I'll definitely try it, but am saving it for a cooler time of year, since the heat is making me feel like a souffle that has been left to sit for too long...

You're very welcome for the recipe. And it is, as you'll have noted, very simple. But not so good for hot weather.

Dairy Queen!! Gad. In one of many possible parallel worlds, I am not severely lactose-intolerant. Sigh. What did you have? And, was it wonderful?

Souffle! Kitchen events again! Your kitchen seems to have claim to several of the major points of your foot adventure, have you noticed?

The first time you step forward on your right foot and don't think about how it will feel when it lands is going to be an amazing moment, too.

The world would be much less colorful had Andrew Lloyd Weber not taken the life-path that he has, or if he didn't exist at all.

At Dairy Queen, I had what I always have: a kiddy cone. (I.e., a very small vanilla cone.) I prefer the ice cream at Costco, but it's a lot further away, and should be saved for very special occasions.

Well - I couldn't go in there. Then I could. Kitchens are important places.

The world would be much less colorful had Andrew Lloyd Weber not taken the life-path that he has, or if he didn't exist at all.

And there would be fewer cool and dramatic musicals.

My own new favorite place for such things is a local thing called Rita's Italian Ice. They have frozen custard. Aahhh.

Jesus Christ Superstar was one of my first main exposures to musical theater, and to this day I love it intensely.

Well - I couldn't go in there. Then I could. Kitchens are important places.

Heh. You and I certainly can have different ways of looking at something!
