fajrdrako: Ninth Doctor - Christopher Eccleston ([Doctor Who])
[personal profile] fajrdrako

I spent half the episode biting my nails, and half the episode grinning like a fool. It thrilled and surprised me. On numerous counts. If I wasn't already mad over this show... but of course, I am.

I wonder where to start.

Even though I avoided spoilers, I knew from the trailer that we'd have Rose, Sarah Jane and Luke, the Torchwood crew, Donna, and Martha.... but I never, never expected Harriet Jones. And an utterly heroic Harriet Jones, who seems to be far-sighted and wise.

I loved that. And more. But I seem to think best in point form these days, so:
  1. Love the big guns carried by Rose and Jack. Is that because they are both Torchwood?

  2. Loved hearing the Doctor speaking the Judoon language.

  3. Loved the Shadow Lady saying "You cannot exist" to the Doctor. He's heard that before.

  4. Who tried to 'move the earth a long time ago'? Was it Davros?

  5. We saw the Shadow Proclamation - I loved that. I loved all the sci-fi touches that we so seldom get in Doctor Who: misplaced planets in the sky (and we saw them!), islands in space, space ships (even if they're just Dalek ships).

  6. Davros was technically the big baddy, but the character I loved was Dalek Caan. Who knew a Dalek could go crazy? And then be so cute when crazy, wiggling his tentacles. His voice and speech patterns reminded me of Gollum. Was that supposed to be fear? I didn't think so. Does he have a crush on the Doctor? That's what it sounded like. "The Dark Lord is come."

  7. Project Indigo - UNIT's version of the Sontaran teleportation device. Cool. Wonder what the whatsis key is - the Osterhagen Key ... Interesting that Martha is in New York now, and promoted. Maybe because of her good work in fending off Sontarans? How much time has gone by?

  8. What is the Crucible? (Besides a play by Arthur Miller...?)

  9. Nice to see Mr. Smith working well. Poor Luke didn't have much of a role, except to be left behind - I find myself hoping he'll disobey his mother and do something heroic. I loved it that she said "I love you" to him as she left.

  10. Much of the plot is centred on the Doctor's attempts to find the Earth, and the attempts of his friends on Earth to contact him. Fair enough. But he was only separated from the Earth by accident in that he went back into the TARDIS at the operative moment - and it didn't go with the Earth. So if he'd just delayed a minutes, he'd have been with them, no need to search for them, or for them to search for him. But then also... by the story as set up, he then wouldn't have the TARDIS, presumably because it carries its own space and time around with it. Anyway, it was a fun plot, a bit of hide-and-seek1 mixed with a bit of hide-the-thimble, and a wild ride while it happened.

I quite preferred it that the Doctor and Martha were separated from the Earth, if only because we then got to see the Shadow Proclamation.

  11. The Valiant is destroyed. I hope they rebuild it. I liked the Valiant.

  12. "Look at the sky." That was very like "Look at the rain" in "Smith and Jones". That was another example of something significant on Earth being transported unexpectedly through space - and through the use of Judoon technology, in the only other episode to feature the Judoon. Now, I see no reason to think that Judoon technology is connected to Dalek technology, but it does make a sort of thematic link.

  13. Loved seeing Wilf tell Sylvia where Donna has been. Of course, I just plain love Wilf. No wonder Donna is so cool, with a grandfather like that.

  14. The reunion of Martha and her mother wasn't nearly as interesting.

  15. Loved the Doctor's line: "I was just a kid. Ninety years old."

  16. Ianto: "Loss of dignity." Heh. Interesting to see the <>Doctor Who eye-view of Ianto, which isn't quite like the Ianto we see in Torchwood. "Furniture polish" - Ianto has a goofy sense of humour. He's more girly than Gwen is. But cute.

  17. Loved Gwen's reaction to the Doctor.

  18. Wilf: "Get inside, Sylvia. They always want the women." Hee - no, Gramps, you're wrong, not this time. The Daleks exterminate everyone, regardless of age or gender.

  19. Love the Dalek chorus. Those Daleks have a sense of style.

  20. Loved it when Donna said to the Doctor, "Rose is back. Isn't that good?" and he smiled. Sometimes I totally love Donna. "Good" being a relative thing, of course, when universes are colliding and worlds are ending.

  21. Richard Dawkins. What a hoot.

  22. Loved seeing Wilf take on a Dalek with a paint gun. Loved seeing Rose save him. I liked it that Rose and Jack both have alien-tech guns that can kill Daleks. It made it all the more poignant when the UNIT Commander took on the Daleks with a pistol, knowingly.

  23. So Captain Jack learned about Project Indigo from a soldier he picked up in a bar. I cringe when Ianto is jealous. Did he believe Jack when he said it was 'purely professional'? I didn't. C'mon, Jack, you were chatting up strane men for purposes of getting information out of them. No doubt loving every moment of it. And he sure got a lot of information: he knew enough of the technical details of the Indigo device to know how it could be used to fix his vortex manipulator with its 'teleport base code'. That soldier must have had really a lot to say.

  24. What did the Doctor say about a cinder in the Sahara?

  25. When the Shadow Woman told Donna she was sorry about her future loss, that terrified me into believe Gramps was about to get it from the Daleks. In other words, I was suckered. Ouch!

  26. I loved it that when Captain Jack realized the Daleks had come, he panicked - after all, they caused his first death, and not even the Doctor could stop their advance - and then kissed both Ianto and Gwen. Echoes of "The Parting of the Ways" when he kissed the Doctor and Rose.

  27. Love the uses of salutes.

  28. The Shadow Lady wants to comandeer the TARDIS. And she let the Doctor close the door on her. Not wise. Not wise at all. Giving orders to the Doctor just doesn't work.

  29. Loved it when the drunk in the street said to Rose, "It's the end of the stinkin' world," and she said, "Have one on me, mate."

  30. The meeting, by sub-wave, of Jack and Sarah Jane, now rendering my story in which they met as totally AU - I guess it was inevitable. I liked it that he flirted and I liked it that she liked it that he flirted. That exceeded all my hopes. I feared they'd play it cold.

  31. And all the better that Harriet Jones reacted in the Doctor's role with her "not now, Captain". Echoed in turn by Donna pointing to the screen and saying, "Who's that?" and the Doctor saying, "Don't, Donna, just... don't." Hee.

  32. I liked it that Harriet Jones had the courage of her convictions. In that instance, she appears wiser than the Doctor.

  33. "Boost the signal" - isn't that a reference to something, too?

  34. Loved it that Harriet Jones, Jack, Sarah Jane, Martha, and the Doctor and Rose could see and hear each other, and Rose could hear all of them, but they couldn't hear or see her. Because Sylvia said web-cams were naughty. That strikes me as a wonderful detail, especially since it emphasized the different levels of technology - the contrast between the Noble's living room and Torchwood and Mr Smith. I loved it that Rose was with Gramps and Sylvia.

  35. Loved the Red Dalek Supreme. What a great name. It's like a combination of the Supreme Hydra and the Red Skull. Brilliant. And I loved it that the Red Dalek Supreme called Dalek Caan an abomination - the Abomination is a Hulk villain.

  36. Loved the way we got so many of the references that have occurred throughout series 4: the disappearing bees, the Shadow Proclamation, the Medusa Cascade, lost planets - what am I forgetting? I still think 'choice' is crucially important, and we got a good example of that with "Turn Left".

  37. Love it when the Doctor spaces out. When he does that - doesn't listen or respond - I usually think he is trying to use telepathic/ultrasensory perception to get more information, in an attempt to see a solution.

  38. I wasn't too happy that Captain Jack freaked at first, but he rallied and I loved the glee with which he fixed his vortex manipulator (about time!) and grabbed his very biggest gun and went to see the Doctor with his biggest grin on his face - while reassuring Ianto he'd be back.

  39. Harriet: "Tell the Doctor from me: he chose his companions well." Awww.

Now, actually, I think he chose them randomly - but had the knack of having a good influence on them, and was lucky.

Loved it that she put Jack 'in charge'.

  40. Seeing the TARDIS control room on fire: scary.

  41. "It's like an outer space Facebook." Uh-huh. Do they have Scrabulous?

  42. With all that other wonderful stuff going on, Davros himself was something of an anticlimax, except maybe when he opened his shirt. Maybe he will be more interesting next episode. But at least he inspired the Doctor to give us some details of the Time Way.

  43. Love it, totally love it, when the Doctor says, "But that's impossible!" It's almost as good as when he says "No, no, no, no, no." And we got both this episode.

  44. "I have only one thing to say tyou - Bye!" Is it just me, or was that the Doctor sounding like the Master?

  45. Totally loved Ianto's brave tiny smile when he told Jack, "We'll be fine."

  46. Scary, scary moment: being inside Torchwood and hearing the Daleks outside saying, "Exterminate."

  47. I can't help thinking that there's something to the phrase "The Darkness" that we don't know yet.

  48. Rose and the Doctor meet again. Aww. Running - that would be too cheesy to bear except that 'running' is one of the show's major themes. And he gets shot. And Jack shoots the Dalek - great moment! - and takes charge and takes the Doctor into the TARDIS to regenerate. Love it that Jack says, "Good luck, Doctor."

  49. I have no fears at all for the lives of Sarah Jane and our other assorted Companions.

  50. So the Doctor is regenerating. WTF? What's that about? Tennant's not leaving the show. So - what's going on?

  51. No trailer. Gad. They are so cagey. What they will do for suspense. And it works.

    ~ ~ ~
1 But not, of course, the naked hide and seek that Jack likes to play at Torchwood.

Oh I wibbled hard at that! Especially since they knew they were targeted but didn't tell Jack before he left~ With the only anti-Dalek weapon of course!

I did too. Great Ianto moment.

We don't known it was the only anti-Dalek weapon. It was the only one of its kind - I love it that it's like the one Rose has at her alternate-universe Torchwood - but we know Jack has other big guns. Anyway - I think Gwen and Ianto will manage to foil the Daleks somehow.

Hope so.

What about the line about "the death of your most loyal companion?" I'm still confused.

What about the line about "the death of your most loyal companion?" I'm still confused.

I don't pretend to understand, but I don't think it's any of the characters we know and love. For one thing, they are all loyal - who could be the 'most' loyal?

It might be K-9, who has died before, and had been rebuilt. Dogs are the most loyal companions. And isn't K-9 busy with an imploding/exploding black hole, or something like that?

Tennant is leaving the show to do Hamlet, remember. RTD & Co have just been playing us along about him returning for the specials next year in and around the stage stuff. I guess that's a lie.

I don't believe it for a minute. He has plenty of time to play Hamlet and Doctor Who, too. He's bound to leave the show eventually - but not yet, I'm sure. Especially with news items of the huge salary being offered him to stick around.

The Cybermen moved the Earth in Classic Who.

Cool.

Got it! I didn't quite catch the line and it's difficult to rewind .avi files on my machine.

The spoiler is the hand that jack had. It is in the Tardis. they flashed on it at the beginning. I think they'll have to bring him back using his hand.

Just my two cents, I'm not reading spoilers either

Yes, I think there's a reason we saw the Hand. We saw it a couple of times through series 4 too, though it was never actually used for anything - so that might be still to come.

33. "Boost the signal" - isn't that a reference to something, too?

To my memory, it's a reference to an episode of Star Trek (the Original Series), when the interesting individual known as "Gary Seven" shows up. Does that mean he'll show up again?? :-)

Just a thought ...

Date: 2008-07-03 08:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
More likely Firefly than Star Trek, I think, given Russell T. Davies' taste in television, but you never know.

Gary Seven might fit nicely with Doctor Who, come to think of it. Or, even better, Torchwood.

And an utterly heroic Harriet Jones, who seems to be far-sighted and wise.
Are you sure of that? I was chatting with a friend who pointed out that we never see her actually exterminated. I tend to think she was because she was always a little heroic, even when being a complete ass. But the potential remains. And how funny was, "Yes, I know who you are"?

the Osterhagen Key
Actually makes me suspicious of Harriet. It's apparent that UNIT thinks it's a good last line of defense. What's Harriet got against it? Then again, Jack objected to Project Indigo.

Loved Gwen's reaction to the Doctor.
I did, too, but I couldn't make out what Ianto said in reply. Was that jealous!Ianto again, or interested!Ianto?

I have no fears at all for the lives of Sarah Jane and our other assorted Companions.
Considering they're all going to have new seasons, I can see your point. (Well, Martha may or may not be in next season's Torchwood five parter, but I'm not worried about her.) But this could have an irrevocable affect on Ianto and Jack's relationship. Although how much did you love Jack promising that he'd be back? And it was important that he be there, to save Rose and possibly the Doctor.

the glee with which he fixed his vortex manipulator (about time!)

And if the Doctor disables it again, I'm going to be very annoyed that this is becoming a final episode of the season THEME. Then again, I still don't understand why he didn't steal John's at the end of "Exit Wounds."

"Furniture polish"
I loved seeing a happy Ianto. Sure, his timing was inappropriate, but it was wonderful to see him relaxed enough to laugh. He hasn't had a chance to laugh in two seasons of Torchwood.

Things that I loved that you didn't mention:

"Rhys you big idiot!" I love Gwen when she and Rhys are together like that. It was a quick reminder that she is the connection to real life. Well, RHYS is the connection to real life... I'm confident that Gwen and Ianto will machine gun down the daleks (and, yeah, daleks in the Hub was terrifying) but I'm not all that confident about Rhys. But without Rhys there's no point to Gwen, afaic, so he'd better live.

"I'm going out fighting. Like Owen. Like Tosh." Made me choke up a little, but made me feel good. They aren't going to be forgotten. And Ianto calling her "Mum" which I take it is akin to "ma'am" in the US military. That was actually beautiful to me.

"The loss to come" has me dying with speculation. Donna's the only Companion who is for absolute sure not coming back. (Well, Catherine Tate is not going to be back.) So she might be about to die but I think it's much deeper than that. I kind of hope we find out that she's a Time Lord with Chameleon Arch protection. I'd like to find out that she's Romana, actually. (Making the appearance of Richard Dawkins a really subtle hint.) And then she can go her own way afterwards. But I think that's unlikely. Best guess for me is that she merges with the Tardis or maybe with the Doctor somehow. One reason I doubt she'll just die is that one doesn't offer condolences on their loss to someone who is about to die. Wilf might be about to die but he's not the most loyal companion. When you come right down to it, ROSE is the most loyal and I can't see offering Donna condolences on Rose's demise.

My friend in the UK says there will be a trailer but not until tomorrow. So we have to wait. And wait. And wait. Because it'll probably be on the BBC website and geo-locked. Phhhhbbbbbttttt, I sez!

I'm pretty sure Tennant will be back, and I wonder if the hand in the jar is part of the reason he won't change. Did you see "Confidential" with Billie Piper? She doesn't give anything away but she does make an issue of how Rose is exceptionally fond of this version of the Doctor.

All in all, a very engaging episode that left us wanting more, which was (after all) the whole point. It worked. I don't know if I can last until next Saturday!

Yes - good thinking - a chance to start over with a different set of counting. I don't care how they sort it out - I love it that they're doing new and unexpected things.

49. I have no fears at all for the lives of Sarah Jane and our other assorted Companions.

50. So the Doctor is regenerating. WTF? What's that about? Tennant's not leaving the show. So - what's going on?

At this stage, I have no confidence that *anyone* makes it out alive to return for the next episode let alone the next series! One one hand I'm terrified that the tidbits of info I've picked up aren't what they seem (The Doctor can't regenerate into someone else, I'm not ready for a new one!!), but on the other I'm absolutely thrilled that RTD & co have still managed to surprise me, even will all the media coverage.

That's how I feel. I'm finding it safer, even with SJS and Jack fronting spinoffs, to assume everyone dies, ie Blake's 7. That way, if there are any survivors, I'll feel they ended up ahead.

Hmm, could he possibly be regenerating into 11...who just happens to have the same face as 10? It'd theoretically be possible. AFAIK, Timelords do have the option of controlling their regenerations. Yana was able to go younger when he regenerated. So we could still have DT playing the Doctor, but he'd be 11 rather than 10 and would have a totally different personality.
Now that would be interesting indeed!

Heh. Could be interesting indeed.

When the Doctor became Ten he didn't seem to have much control - said he wanted to be ginger not brown. Somewhere there is a quote from one of the Doctors saying that regeneration is like gambling, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

I like that theory! That would be fun, and it would be something totally new, but based on what we've had in the past.

Squee. Just squee. Always squee. I've got 5 1/2 days until the next episode, and they don't half know how to cliffhang. Rusty can be a bit rusty on details, but he can sure hit plots.

Did the Shadow lass say that Donna still had that on her back? Is this a cue for another reset button? I hope not, it's getting to be a habit.

You ask about the darkness - I see one other mention of the Dark in your notes. "The Dark Lord is come." But indeed, how do Daleks go crazy - they can only go crazier. At least there was an in-script explaination for how Dav got back.

To me the sciffy reference that "the abomination" pulls up is from Animorphs, visser 3 (later visser 1). However, he's only referred as that by the good guys he double-crossed, so it doesn't entirely fit.

Love the use of paintgun. It was worth a try. Donna's home-crew have been good with the low-tech (car window, anyone?) this season.

Who's the most loyal companion? Rose has traveled universes. Jack has waited a hundred years. SJS was abandoned, but still accepted him back. And Donna, as far as we know, has no other agenda other than companionship.

A crucible is a mixing pot for metals, a place of creation.

As much as I love DT in the role and want Donna to live, I agree. I'm beginning to get the feeling that she's going to sacrifice herself by overloading on Time Beetle to put this right. She'd have to stop Dalek Caan from going back to get Davros.

What wonderful news. An extra-long episode! I love it.

But... I may be late getting it. I'm getting a new computer. Probably. What a terrible time for a delay.

Maybe I could borrow [livejournal.com profile] maaseru's computer briefly....

Sorry I was slow getting to my LJ comments, it's been a wild week.
