Jason Isaacs. Jason Isaacs. Jason-how-do-I-love-thee Isaacs. Woo.
Now, I have a long association of fondness for that story. The Disney animated version of "Peter Pan" is the first movie I ever remember seeing. I was four. I like J.M. Barrie's writing; I enjoyed the only biography of him I have read; I love the audio-tape of "Peter Pan" that is read by Samuel West. Samuel West, who played Lord Fucking Gorgeous, a.k.a. Lord Edrington, in the "Horatio Hornblower" episode "The Wrong War" a.k.a. "The Frogs and the Lobsters". *That* Samuel West, the one with the beautiful voice.
The only version of "Peter Pan" I have seen and disliked was "Hook". I didn't like it because I have a major problem watching Robin Williams in most movies, and this was no exception; and because I didn't like the premise. The point to Peter Pan is that he doesn't grow up. If he grows up.... Well, he's hardly Peter Pan, is he? This central contradiction annoyed me. It might not have annoyed me if it were not for Robin Williams, who knows?
Anyway... Jason Isaacs. My goodness. The man I love in everything and anything. In "Peter Pan", of all things. Life feels good.
You can check it out here.

Jason Isaacsy piratey goodness...mmmm...
As if I wasn't already a little bit pirate-obsessed these days. Swoon.

Date: 2003-08-04 07:52 am (UTC)I love just about anything to do with Peter Pan--even "Hook," though I dislike many things about this movie. I don't like Robin Williams, either. My husband is much funnier and should be making what he makes.
What mainly bugged me was his family continually harrassing him about business obligations. This is so cliched. This screen family obviously enjoyed a very comfortable lifestyle, yet couldn't let the guy do the job which was making it possible? I know the point they were trying to make, that perhaps he could've made time for the Little League games, etc., and just didn't, but they made too big a deal out of this in the movie. You can't have everything, dammit.
I did like Dustin Hoffman as Capt. Hook.
Aha. Dark hair, nose. I do find him attractive, too, come to think of it.
AND: another thing we have in common. I saw it when I was 4, too: we both no doubt saw it on its initial release. I remember my parents let me sit through TWO SHOWINGS of it that afternoon. I have a very vivid memory of being surrounded by the neighborhood kids afterward, bragging about seeing the movie twice that day, and their being VERY impressed.
The original Peter Pan ride at Disneyland was great.
And, one of my worst childhood nightmares, which sounds quite silly now and probably occurred right around that time, involved Captain Hook chasing me around the decks of his pirate ship, threatening, when he caught me, to give me a good spanking!! Yikes!! Thinking about it still scares me.

Date: 2003-08-04 08:54 am (UTC)Yes, and I'm sure your husband wouldn't depress me the way Williams always does.
I also liked Dustin Hoffman as Hook; he was the best thing in the movie IMHO, though I've forgotten most of it, except Julia Roberts as Tinkerbelle.
Re Hoffman's looks: yes, I agree. Add Al Pacino to the list, too.
Yes, we must have both seen it when it was first out! Two showings. My goodness. You were lucky.
As for your nightmare of being chased by Hook for a spanking.... If it were Jason Isaacs that would probably be a way for me to quickly develop a new kink. Mmm.
Not necessarily a nightmare after all.

"J. M Barrie's Neverland" (http://www.miramax.com/jmbarries_neverland/), starring Johnny Depp as Barrie, and Kate Winslet? Ian Hart also plays Conan Doyle.

Date: 2003-08-04 02:10 pm (UTC)I think he'd do a beautiful job of the role as Barrie. It sounds most interesting. (Tho' I'm a little off Miramax at the moment. I'm not sure why.)
