  • John Barrowman was #23 on The Pink List this year. I don't know about 'influential', though he's certainly become famous and familiar on British TV. I like their implication that his greatest strength is his honesty.

This list is full of people I never heard of, and I found the section on European politics and politicians particularly interesting.

I love the phrase "the first gay hip-hop festival in Europe".

  • And from The Globe and Mail a few days ago. It quotes John Barrowman as saying, "I'm becoming an honorary Canadian for the next eight weeks." Sweet. What's the story on his TV wardrobe being seized by customs? Anyone know what happened there?

  • The Toronto Star interviewed John Barrowman. Sadly, they asked him the same questions he's been asked dozens of times by all the British journalists, and he gave the same answers. I couldn't decide whether I liked the article's "woman's point of view" tone, or if I found it too cute. Not that I can fault Malene Arpe's viewpoint: "Even without that dashing coat there's some seriously distracting handsomeness/Captain-ness going on." I wonder which the Maria he likes is?

I confess, though, my Doctor Who fan buttons are pushed when she refers to the TARDIS as a "time machine shaped like a vintage British telephone booth". Even in England, telephone booths never looked like that! I admit that before watching the show, I was unclear as to what a Police Box was - all the more reason for a journalist to get it right.

    Clueless Canadian. Grump.

  • Okay: speaking of the Marias: I've been watching the show, and voting, and I have a few favourites. Unlike with the Josephs, I don't think there are any I don't like - I started out not liking Jayme and then was rather impressed with her performance. My favourite, however, is Jenna, with runner-up Donna and Marisa.

I think being honest and out from the get-go is pretty influential behaviour. It makes a change from those who wait until their careers are well-and-truly established before outing themselves, let alone those who never come out at all. (I certainly understand why people in jobs that require a public presence might delay coming out, but I wish they didn't feel that need).

What's good is that successful careers like John Barrowman's are proving that you can be a public figure - in entertainment, or anywhere - and be gay and out. He's living proof that those who are closeted don't need to be, and the more people come out of the closet, the better it is for all. It's a way of doing away with the ghettos.

Which isn't to say that this kind of honesty isn't influential or heroic.

I always think it's a pity that Ian McKellen had to wait so long before coming out.

Thank you! I hadn't heard him talking about the radio show yet. Very interesting!
