Doctor Boy

The little girl in #4 had curly red hair and a thin face. She was old enough to go to school, but didn't. She always talked softly. Owen, at an age to be impressionable, was fascinated.

Owen thought she'd moved away, because he never saw her any more. Then he heard the grown-ups talking: "so very sad," they said. He realized she had died. "The doctors couldn't do a thing."

Owen decided then and there to grow be a doctor someday, and not just any kind of doctor. He was going to be the kind of doctor who saved people.

This is incredibly sincere and sweet, from someone who does not like Owen very much. Admirable!

You understand children so well. Owen, at an age to be impressionable, was fascinated.

I remember when I decided that I wanted to be a doctor. I wanted to know things and be respected. Everybody respected doctors, and always went to them to get the answers to questions. And when a doctor asked someone a question, that person didn't laugh at them.

Yeah, Owen. Me, too.

In "Fragments" he talks about how he feels (and felt) about being a doctor. It doesn't say when he decided he wanted to be one. Yes, it's a very sweet scene.

Owen, at an age to be impressionable

In one version, that had to be cut because it was too many words for a drabble, said, "Owen, at an age to be fascinated by girls..." because I loved the ambiguity of that - he could be any age. But I was picturing him as being about four.

"Fragments"? I haven't seen it yet; I'll look forward to it. Owen talking about himself always came across with the most intense and purest honesty imaginable: almost too honest and genuine to take without needing to flinch away.

"Owen, at an age to be fascinated by girls..." ... hee... how about, "Owen, at an age to be fascinated by boys"? Either one!

Series two, episode 12. We see how everyone, including Jack, came to be in Torchwood.

Owen is very honest in "Fragments". In truth, I have trouble reconciling the Owen of Fragments with the Owen we've always known. I don't think the one person could become the other, or at least, not so fast.

But that's okay. I'm working on it.

"Owen, at an age to be fascinated by boys"? Either one!

Absolutely!
