This is so very cool.

Lots of my favourite writers have won Hugo Awards and Pulitzer Prizes and the like, but an OBE? Not so much.

The man was influenced by Marvel Comics: of course I love his work.

Order of the British Empire. I knew what that was. I just don't quite know what it means...! Has he been knighted? Or is this just a very exclusive honor?

Either way, quite fitting for the man who played such a key role in bringing back Doctor Who and making him utterly cool and wonderful.

It is a very exclusive honour. In Davies' case, it's less than a knighthood, but more than a kick in the pants. We have the same, more or less, the Order of Canada, conferred by the Governor-General. My old boss, Mrs. Murray, got the Order of Canada.

Basically it's given to people who have done exceptional good for the country - often people with accomplishment in the arts, or in volunteer organizations.

Wikipedia says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OBE), "It is the most junior of the British orders of chivalry and has more members than any other."

Its motto is "For God and the Empire". That sounds like something Yvonne Hartman would say!

I do indeed like the idea that the Queen (or someone she trusts) does acknowledge that Doctor Who being excellent is a very important thing for the Empire! I love that notion. It is so civilized!

I love that notion. It is so civilized!

I do too. It really is... important, I think, for a country that it's songs and stories and TV shows be of good quality. And even more, there's something about Doctor Who that is essentially English, or British - it really does reflect the values and humour of its nation. Insofar as that is possible when (obviously) different people have different ideas within the nation. But it speaks for the country in a certain way.

Yvonne Hartman was the Cyberperson who said that. [g] Yup, you got it. She was head of Torchwood One, in London, before the Cybermen got her in the Doctor Who episode "Doomsday", the one where Rose Tyler fell into the alternate universe.
