My friends and I have not seen an episode of The Professionals for a long time. I'd packed my videotapes in my locker, because I wasn't watching videotapes; I'd hoped to get the series on DVD, but they haven't released it except in the UK. This is, of course, barbaric. And [livejournal.com profile] maaseru no longer had a machine that would play UK DVDs.

But tonight [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi did some technical magic and we were able to watch "Blind Run" (2x09) on an alternate machine.

What a treat. Catherine was quoting dialogue as it came. [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi was devising parallels and crossover plots with To Eroica With Love. Doyle was cavorting in his tight patched jeans and Bodie was smirking and shooting and running in fine fashion.

I covet Philippa's boat.

A good time was had by all.

Could you be less than enchanted with Bodie and Doyle? Gods of the universe? Say it ain't so.

Two words: Lucy Lawless.

Now picturing Lucy Lawless working for CI5.

I don't understand your comment, but it's a nice image.

My comment was an "in your face!" kind of silly thing: uh, can't explain it further, on second thought! Sorry!

I think it would also serve if I had said: "I can see your Bodie and Doyle, and I can trump them: Lucy Lawless." Yeah, that kind of says it.

And, yup, it is a nice image -- CI5 would shudder, but adjust!

A friend sent me a program that makes my computer's DVD player region-free, which was such a relief, as I could play the UK Pros DVDs on it (I have one season, or maybe two, from a friend, for screencaps). Would you like to use it if your computer has a DVD drive?

P.S. How funny you should mention it -- I've been staring at these guys all day, working on a slash piece.

How nice! I might be able to play them on my computer - let me borrow one of [livejournal.com profile] maaseru's discs and let you know. It would be lovely to be able to watch on my own!

I have a couple of episodes as .avi files, but only a couple. Luckily one of them is my favourite episode - "Wild Justice'.

Most computer DVD players give you 5 times to change the region on your DVD drive; after that it's "set" at the 5th choice. So if you haven't played Region 2 DVDs before, it should have a way of accomodating them. This program I got allows you to make the player region free -- it should play any region all the time without forcing you to choose one option after 4 switches. Just let me know if you need the program -- I can loan you my disc of it.

Also, you can check to see if your DVD player for your TV can be made region-free with a simple hack. (The newer el cheapo players often have that option with a simple code using the DVD remote -- none of that complicated old "put in a hack CD, blahblah" nonsense. My current player and my previous one took about 10 seconds to make into region-free players.) I'll bet [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi can help you with that.

I'll check the possibilities.

There is a great resource for finding hack codes for DVD players HERE (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks). You might search for the player you already have and see if there is a code for it - It's as easy as typing some numbers in with your remote control (in most cases.)

If you get that figured out, I hear that the remastered R2 set is going for super-cheap right now.

Is the remastered set good quality? We were somewhat shocked at the poor picture quality of the set we have.

Thanks for the link!

I've never watched the videos, so my comparison is between the first DVD set and the remastered set - There are some episodes you notice a real quality improvement on, a lot of them you wouldn't notice unless you were a screen capper, and a couple look just the same (to me). If you can get the old set second hand for next to nothing, you might just go for that - But if you order one new, I hear the price is good right now on the remastered.

If you *really* want a more indepth review of the remastered set, I could look through my past emails as I *know* several of my friends posted very detailed comparisons a while back - It would just take me a while to find them...

No, don't go out of your way to ask about it, I can't afford to buy the set at the moment anyway. And I'm not super-fussy over quality - obviously I'd like as good as I can get, but everything is good compared to the nth-generation video-tapes I used when I first saw the show in the early 1980s. Fuzzy blobs of colour is all they were.

It's all better than that, now. And I do have the video-tapes, when I have the ability to get them out of my locker downstairs.
