Book sale day...

First stop: Charles de Lint's yard sale. Last year, I was thrilled to buy a bunch of Batman graphic novels. The selection didn't seem as interesting this year, possibly because a person has trouble browsing a bunch of books - especially in boxes on the ground - with crutches. I ran into Janet and Ronn, and Roger Casselman, which was fun.

I bought one thing: Billi 99 by Sarah Byam and Tim Sale. (If you don't know Tim Sale's art from comics, you might know his work from Heroes - he draws just like Isaac did.)

Next maaboroshi and Catherine went to the rather wonderful book sale at the Arboretum - an annual even put on by Friends of the Experimental Farm. maaseru and I, unable to handle the walking or the heat, went for a drink and a bite at McDonald's.

Next: a huge book sale in an arena in Gatineau. Very heavily attended, though the books seemed well picked over. I struggled into the hot and humid arena, and looked quickly over the books in other languages - saw no Latin or Esperanto, and only a little tempting Italian. Getting that far was a major effort. I left, and sat in the car with maaseru, doing my foot exercises.

Then the heat got the better of Catherine, and we all went home to recover.

maaboroshi picked up for me an anthology of Medieval literature and a copy of The Murder of Charles the Good - I remember enjoying that greatly as an undergraduate - and a copy of the works of Lord Byron. All in one paperback edition. Tiny print. Cool.

What is it about June 7, that Ottawa has all these book sales?

I keep picking up word of this particular yard sale, and yet I also keep managing to find a way to forget to show up on the day in question. An ongoing annoyance, and one of these years I'll have to fix that particular memory wagon.

I seem to recall that the lady who wrote Billi 99 went on to write the first two solo series to feature Black Canary. I seem to have been in a small group of people indeed who enjoyed that run. I wish that whoever writes the Birds of Prey these days would pick up those characters from that run and use them again.

Ah! There was a cute reference to Black Canary in Billi 99 - in it, two kids were reading a comic called "Black Canary Comics". Now I know why!

Judging by this work, she's a very good writer.

I'd agree. Her run with the Canary never seems to have gotten the respect it deserves. A common enough complaint about a lot of stuff we've both read/watched/listened to over the years, true, but I miss those supporting characters and villains.

It happens a lot, and some of my favourite writers in comics have had only a brief time on their series. Which is a pity.

Healing very, very slowly! I still can't step on it, but there's almost no pain now, and just a little swelling. The physiotherapist had me riding a stationary bike last week, that was exciting!

I'm tired of crutches, but the end is in sight. I hope.

Booksales that one can wander at would be better than booksales on crutches. But yes, it's endless fun to browse! Especially when there's a good selection.

Charles de Lint has the honor of being the nicest and most gracious pro I have ever met at a con (which isn't meant to reflect badly on the pros I meet at cons, rather to reflect well on de Lint).

And I would soooooooooo hit his yard sale!!

I like Charles de Lint very much - yes, gracious, but also intelligent and interesting.

But I've met a lot of gracious and wonderful pros at conventions.

His yard sale is always terrific. Especially good for graphic novels.

The only thing wrong with Charles de Lint is, he has yet to put out a cd for me to buy.

I want the time machine and the cute Time Lord to go with it.

I'm surprised Charles de Lint hasn't put out a CD. I wonder why not. I've been to a few of his shows - enjoyed them greatly.
