Dim Sum...
May. 4th, 2008 03:22 pmThis morning
As I hobbled through the door on my crutches, a woman standing there, waiting for a table, looked at the cast on my foot and said, "I looked just like that a year ago this time."
I looked at her two strong, healthy feet and felt like screaming out loud in hope.
No: This too shall pass.

Dim sum rocks! I love pork buns and bean buns and tofu-anything and sticky rice. :-)
I'm glad you're getting out more and more. It's all strength training. When will you return to work? Your healthcare system is so much more civilized than ours, as everybody knows except our politicians and those who blindly follow them, but that is a rant for another day. I had three weeks: one week to be more-or-less unconscious in the hospital, and two weeks of sick leave at home. Gah.
Fajrdrako, I have to whisper this part or my squeals will kill the internet. And I assure you that I am not one to carry on this way, not usually.
I was at the rich snob mall yesterday, and... I saw something. Something that made me dizzy. I saw-- I saw Ianto Jones's suits.
I know they get his suits from Zara. Well, there was Unexpected!Zara, so I went in. In past the casual pants, no no, the summer shirts, no... and there they were. The pinstripe (as seen in TTLM among others), the chalkstripe (A Day in the Death and others), even this year's version of the little tan jacket from Countrycide.
The pinstripe was easily available for fondling, so I fondled. It's cut very slim, with narrow lapels, and a nipped-in waist-- the boy must be a rail. It had a most lovely little secret; the twilight-blue silk lining. (Actually, the color of Jack's shirt in your icon!)
Don't tell anyone what I said about it making me dizzy, okay?

Date: 2008-05-05 02:09 am (UTC)That's a shame! I'd love to have received it.
Dim sum rocks!
It's wonderful. And all the more exciting when you hardly get out of the house and it's such delicious food.
It's all strength training.
Yes - and feels very aerobic, too.
When will you return to work?
I really don't know. I see the doctor in two weeks. Maybe he'll tell me then.
I have to whisper this part or my squeals will kill the internet. And I assure you that I am not one to carry on this way, not usually.
Okay, I am listening carefully.
I saw Ianto Jones's suits.
Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
the twilight-blue silk lining.
That sounds very sexy. Jack would like that.
That is so very wonderful. I am envious.

Date: 2008-05-05 03:34 am (UTC)It's funny how having messed up limbs brings out the solidarity in people.
It won't be like this for long, I promise.

It's funny how having messed up limbs brings out the solidarity in people.
So many people have lived through it.
It won't be like this for long, I promise.
Thank you for saying that. Thank you, thank you!

Date: 2008-05-05 03:52 am (UTC)And second reaction: What a kind thing to say to a stranger. I smile just to think of the moment.
Third thought: This will be you in a year, never doubt that. Holding the door for a stranger on crutches, passing on some hope.

Lovely thought! Yes!

Date: 2008-05-06 01:21 am (UTC)Now I'm going to go home and dine on some steamed broccoli, and watch the first episode of Heroes, and do other good stuff. Thinking of you working towards next year this time. Quite a lovely thought.

Did you get the DVD set?
I hope it doesn't take me a year to become mobile again!

Date: 2008-05-07 01:02 am (UTC)I am sorry to hear that. I hope it didn't discourage you.
Good days and bad days and days in between. I'm having that, too.
I hope it doesn't take me a year to become mobile again!
You're feeling frustrated by the constraints on your mobility and the limits on your activities. This is actually a good sign, mia kara: it means you're not feeling nearly as injured/hurt/sick/unwell[pick one or more] as you had been. And, I didn't have dawn on me until later last night, yesterday was four weeks since you fell. I think you've come incredibly far in just 28 days. Anticipate that the doctor will give you a walking-sort of cast, and permission to start walking therapy, next time you see him -- and that will be something else, won't it?
Just get through the next two weeks. Deal with immobility a little longer. You have done amazing things already. (And, yes, I am talking about getting the refrigerator door open by yourself, as well as all the other things you know you've accomplished.) You'll be back to your blithe pedestrian self within months, I'd say. No, it won't take you a year to be mobile again! Don't let a bad day get you down. You'll be fine. You're very brave, even though you don't admit it to yourself.
I'll stop. I'm getting mushy.

Date: 2008-05-08 11:59 pm (UTC)I've just realized that I don't have to sit in the noisy computer lab to work online. I can take my little backpack-size laptop and sit outside, within the WiFi zone. Then again... random talkers! Well, maybe I can sit in my car? [g]

Sounds handy. Very nice!
maybe I can sit in my car?
Why not?

Date: 2008-05-09 12:41 am (UTC)Is it one of the flat ones?
re laptop access -- Good in theory! I'll soon find out if my computer can function that way.
Car -- why not would be if the walls of the building were the limits of the wireless service. I'll find out.

Date: 2008-05-05 04:54 am (UTC)But you are ALLOWED to complain: of course it's annoying. You would not be human if it wasn't annoying and a PITA and depressing. (Of course, you may get answering gripes from me about my arm...)
So glad that you got out today for dim sum. The Mandarin Ogilvie's version sounds better than the ones on Somerset Street: I must try it soon.

Date: 2008-05-05 01:23 pm (UTC)Grin. Yes. Sometimes I want to scream. And 'feeling better' has its downside in that I am still constrained to immobility: though I've strategically worked out some ways to do things, there are still an infinite number of simple things I can't do. Drives me nuts.
Of course, you may get answering gripes from me about my arm...
Yes. I do hope it's improving somewhat. So - stubborn, that arm!

If you want a volunteer companion to go there, just let me know! I personally think it's better than the Somerset ones, though they are good too.
