Valiant Efforts

Ianto fought jealousy. The mysterious Miss Jones had greeted Jack with a hug, and laughter, and they rushed off to - well, presumably to lunch, but Jack didn't come back to work for hours. Ianto fought for the kind of 22nd-century savoir-faire he was trying to cultivate.

When Ianto brought coffee, later, Jack said, "What's wrong?"

"Who is she, Jack?" He swallowed, tried to be cool. "Another of your lovers?"

Jack's eyes were unreadable, as if remembering pain. "Never a lover. But deeply loved."

"A friend?" persisted Ianto.

Jack shook his head. "Tish was my jailer. And yes, my friend."

Yes, and Jack really does care about them. And they shared something with him that Ianto can't imagine - and he knows it. Aah, life at Torchwood - Ianto's only human.

I always liked the notion that they had become close in their year together - emotionally, not physically, obviously - though if she (and her family) were attending to his physical needs, at it seems, that's a kind of intimacy too. He would have been quite dependent on her.
