Reunion

The bar had dark lighting and a tolerable singer; Captain John nursed his drink and waited for Jack. When Jack entered, he immediately drank the water John had ordered for him, and excused his lateness: "Torchwood business."

"Important," agreed John, hoping desire didn't show in his face. This was 21st-century Jack, all business. Secretive eyes shut John out. "How's things?"

"Tolerable."

It was the answer he might give a stranger. "What am I to you now, Jack? Friend? Enemy?"

Jack burst into one of those warm, infectious Harkness grins. "Both! You're my ex. So, both."

"Drink to it," said John.

I like to think that Jack often has a shrewd understanding of those around him. Especially the lovers and ex-lovers.
