Read another Barrowman interview, mostly notable because it's the first time I've seen him publicly refer to Scott as his husband.

It was a good day: [livejournal.com profile] lmondegreen came over and we watched Doctor Who, then [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi joined us and we watched "Port Hope", which is the first episode of Space Rangers, which we had liked when it was on in the 1990s. The characters were as personable as I remembered; the setting and situation extremely interesting; and the script rather shockingly full of clichés. The characters reminded me of Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos, always a good thing.

And the young rookie soldier, Danny, was an nice analogue to the young soldier Captain Jack Harkness must once have been.

I went along for the drive when [livejournal.com profile] maaseru drove [livejournal.com profile] lmondegreen home, which felt odd, since it was my first time out of the apartment since coming back from the hospital. I felt a little queasy in the car; don't seem to have much strength yet. But. It was good. In some ways it seemed almost like a normal day. It wasn't, but it was closer than I've had in a long time.

Which is a nice thought.

HOLY JUMPING FROGS FROM CALAVERAS COUNTY!!!!!

...um, where did you get hold of Space Rangers, please?

Gad. How well I remember discussing that show with you in postcards, in the lovely, unhurried era before either of us had a computer!

Linda Hunt! She was perfect in the role.

And, yes, silly cliches, but... such heart it had!

I went along for the drive ...

This I had to read twice, because my eyes told me something I didn't know could yet be true: you went outside! Yay, you! Wow, that was a major step. Hope the queasiness does not appear on Friday.

It did. And really interesting characters. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest! I don't know if I ever did see all the episodes. Few though there were.

because my eyes told me something I didn't know could yet be true: you went outside! Yay, you!

Yes. Really quite exciting.

The characters were wonderful, yes. Some of them seem to have inspired characters that came later: the pilot, see Starbuck in her? and also Officer Aeryn Sun from Farscape? The big scary guy: again from Farscape, Ka D'argo; and a similar guy in Stargate Atlantis. The leader of the team: Major Sheppad in Stargate Atlantis, and actually possibly Mal in Firefly. Yes, I know: these can all be said to be wonderful archetypes, and Space Rangers did not inspire them in the other shows, so much as just did them first and then the other shows came later as they would have anyway. But I like to think that someone, somewhere, saw this lovely little gem of a show and felt inspired by it. Someone apart from those few of us who watched it during its brief life.

And you didn't say -- where'd you get hold of the episodes? Eagerly curious about that one!

Sort of. I like the pilot.

and also Officer Aeryn Sun from Farscape?

I haven't seen enough Farscape to pick up on that.

Generally militaristic archetypes, yes, but done rather well and in different ways.

The Space Rangers episodes were a gift from a friend.

Ah! lucky you. You have such cool friends.

I finally tracked down Witchblade on DVD; turns out, the online DVD place I got it from just copied videotaped episodes onto DVD-Rs. Suits me fine! At least now I have it. I have no idea why it has not been brought out commercially; it starred Yancy Butler as Detective Sarah Pezzini of the New York Police Department, and was utterly stunning both visually and in character and plot. I'd call it one of the best transfers of a comic book to television that I've ever seen.

I do.

I finally tracked down Witchblade on DVD;

It seems odd to me that Witchblade would be difficult to find. Just as it was difficult to find Stingray for all those years!

I have utterly no idea why it is not already out commercially on DVD. Besides the cult-fan aspects, which makes it like printing money to produce those DVD sets, the actress who played the lead has had some major problems with alcoholism since doing the show and I am sure could use the extra royalties. That might be what's holding it up, actually -- can't do actor interviews or commentaries if your lead actress is incapacitated by that illness...?

If a problem with alcohol on the part of an actor held up production of a DVD, I think we'd be seeing fewer DVDs than we actually do see.

Usually if there's no DVD it's because of a technical or rights problem - which is possible - or someone thinks it doesn't have enough market appeal.

You'd think Witchblade would be just the sort of thing that's ideal for DVD.

Those first times going out, driving, doing a social thing - god, you just don't realize how much you take that stuff for granted until you're out of them for a while!

That is so true. And it was quite wonderful but also quite intimidating - while only a few weeks ago it would have felt so mundane. Now it all feels like steps, a little bit more that I can do every day, maybe not well - but worth trying.

I walked up the four flights of stairs to my workplace this morning, the first time since I was in the hospital! (It's either that or the freight elevator, which feels vaguely embarrassing.)

How wonderful! Congratulations! I am truly impressed.

I hope I'm saying that sometimes soon - I hardly know what timeframe to hope for - we shall see.

It's either that or the freight elevator, which feels vaguely embarrassing.

I try never to be embarrassed by anything, especially things I can't help or control, but - who wants to be 'freight' if they can find an alternative?

Sweetie, good to know you are recovering and slowly regaining your strength. I didn't have Internet access for a few days, so when I read about your accident, you were already out of hospital. Hope you will be feeling better each day from now on. *hugs*

Thank you so much for the kind words. Yes, it feels like a strange sort of re-emergence to real life and I'm well aware I have a way to go yet. There are all sorts of strangenesses in even trivial actions.

*hugs*

John is such a darling, with his beautiful husband. And his not-not-well-endowedness. ;-)

Was it wonderful to get out of the house? I was perfectly frantic to, after a couple of weeks. I hope you live on the ground floor? Tell me, so I can be even more depressed about American healthcare: is your home aid nurse part of your treatment? Or an extra that you've paid for? Because DAMN, that would have been beyond divine.

I'm sorry I haven't been here to cheer you on daily-- been in Paris, soaking in beauty. But I thought of you every day, and wished you well.

I think so. Love the way he's so outspoken, and comfortable with it,

his not-not-well-endowedness.

The comment made me laugh.

Was it wonderful to get out of the house?

It definitely was. At the same time, it was sort of overwhelming, in a 'not sure I'm ready for this yet' kind of way. I was in [livejournal.com profile] maaseru's car, so it was liek being a turtle - out an protected at the same time. In a way, not I think of it, the part that felt best was the challenge of getting in and out of the car - getting in and out of the apartment, crossing the lobby, and so on - all of which went flawlessly and gave me a little more confidence.

The home nurse is from CCAC (http://www.ccac-ont.ca/Content.aspx?EnterpriseID=11&LanguageID=1&MenuID=3), a provincial body that provides In-home services for people who can't take care of themselves.

And yes, it is beyond divine. Really.

been in Paris, soaking in beauty

How wonderful! Give my regards to the Sainte-Chapelle and the Musée Cluny and - oh my goodness, there are so many beautiful places in Paris and I love them all. Have a marvellous time. Thank you for thinking of me, and I will picture you in all my favourite Parisian spots, maybe with a croissant and a café. Now, that's divine!

Oh, I'm back from Paris now, back to the mundanity of American food and a burst water heater. But yes, I basked in Cluny, and Ste Chapelle, and l'Institute du Monde Arabe, and silly Versailles, and the Pantheon, and soaked in those delicious dark winding medieval streets of the Contrescarpe...

sort of overwhelming, in a 'not sure I'm ready for this yet' kind of way

Yes, I remember feeling that. My first outing, post-hospital, was a friend taking me to a teeny tiny museum in town. It was enough to be challenging, but not so much as to be discouraging.

My nemesis was also a treacherous bit of ice. Unbelievable. Had I stepped left or right my life would have been so different. Well, we are all fortune's fools, as they say.

Hee - after France, everyone else's food is a letdown. Except maybe Italy.

and a burst water heater

Oh, no! I hope nothing valuable was damaged.

My first outing, post-hospital, was a friend taking me to a teeny tiny museum in town. It was enough to be challenging, but not so much as to be discouraging.

Sounds like a good sort of thing. Interesting enough to be worthwhile, too.

My nemesis was also a treacherous bit of ice.

We are not alone in this. Lots of people have had such mishaps on ice. It doesn't seem right, somehow.

Journalists often to do that.

They also misquote and misrepresent things too, so you can't always believe what they report.

Very true. Could be two collections of quotes taken wildly out of context and thus not making a lotta sense together.
