fajrdrako: ([Torchwood] - Captain John)

It's always hard to know what to say about an episode of Battlestar Galactica. Which watching, I find them riveting and fascinating. But without fannish involvement, and with the sense that the plot and story are a reality unto themselves, beyond analysis or anticipation. And as you all know here, I love analysis and anticipation.

The best thing was the Cylon civil war. Is it just me, or did that come out of nowhere? Fascinating!

I have been fascinated with Starbuck from the beginning. I still find she has changed in ways I don't like - that make her less interesting. And okay, admittedly, the search for Earth has always been the aspect of the ongoing plot that I've liked least. Starbuck's attack on Roslin reminded me of her plot to assassinate Caine; I like the Caine storyline much more.

Loved Starbuck's scene with Lee Adama - especially the kiss. Those two are, and remain, hot.

But... nothing, nothing all in this episode did anything to lessen my secret craving for a William Adama/Starbuck ship. Those two really get to me. I was glad that Adama remained on Starbuck's side, and gave her the ship.

Baltar and Tori were interesting. The other humanoid Cylons less so. (No, I am not really including Baltar here as a humanoid Cylon; I'm hoping he isn't one. But could be.)

You saw Peter David's odds chart for "who's the last hidden Cylon?"

No. Do you have a link for them?

I'm not in the fandom, but just occasionally see stuff, and man, can I just say, welcome to my world?

It was soooo strong in S1, and it's re-emerging now. But seriously, it's psychologically credible.

[grin]

Yeah.

It helps that these two have the strongest personalities in the show. Jamie Bamber is the prettiest, and he's hot with Starbuck too, but Starbuck and Adama are explosively strong characters, which Lee is not. Over and over, Adama has done things for Starbuck that he wouldn't do for anyone else, and he can and does inspire her (and support her) above and beyond the call of duty.

But why analyze it? They're hot together for a thousand reasons, and don't even need reasons.

Yes, seems psychologically credible to me, too.

Absolutely. I just remember back to those early S1 episodes, particularly the scene where she's rehabbing her knee, and they were just so hot. The UST was almost unbearable. I've always thought she was screwing everyone around him (both sons and Tigh) because she couldn't have him.

Jamie Bamber is just a little too cookie-cutter for me. I just want to tweak his wittle nose. I like a man with a real nose.

That said, I did think the kiss in "Six of One" was the first time I thought they generated genuine heat.

Yes. That made a big impression on me.

Makes sense to me. Lee seems weak when he's with her - not that I think he is weak, but they are not compatible personalities. When he's with her he's always in danger of being subsumed or trampled.

Jamie Bamber is just a little too cookie-cutter for me.

I like him fine - or at least, I like Lee Adama well enough. But there are a lot of characters I like in that show, one way or another.

I did think the kiss in "Six of One" was the first time I thought they generated genuine heat.

I liked their boxing match. I've liked a lot of their scenes. But I think that - besides that heat - the relationship between Lee and Kara is enpty of substance - a sort of unsustainable love.

Empty of substance is a good description. I think that's why it doesn't grab me as a relationship - it seems built on...what? They don't get along, they have a physical attraction (although I certainly felt very early on he was a substitute for his father). It doesn't quite feel real, a little like high school/college romances that are very intense but fall apart when they realize that it's all pretty superficial.

I thought she had more chemistry with her husband (blanking on name). I wish there'd been more chemistry with Callum Keith Rennie; Leoben is one of those characters I really love in concept, but I've always found CKR so...un-present as an actor.

So...what do we think about Head!Baltar?

Yes. It doesn't seem to get beyond that. There's friendship, and lust, but what else?

I certainly felt very early on he was a substitute for his father

With the complication of Zak in the middle - all sorts of layers of guilt and duty there.

I thought she had more chemistry with her husband (blanking on name).

Anders. Sam Anders.

I wish there'd been more chemistry with Callum Keith Rennie; Leoben is one of those characters I really love in concept, but I've always found CKR so...un-present as an actor.

I didn't think there was much chemistry there either, though I found them frightening together.

what do we think about Head!Baltar?

Hilarious, I thought. Just so over the top as to have a sort of wonky surreal inevitability to it.

It's just you. :D That's been brewing since Season 2 - well, arguably since the very beginning of the series - but shown definitively in 2x18, "Dowloaded", when Caprica (the one who was downloaded directly from the Six who was with Baltar in the mini) and Sharon (the one who was downloaded directly from the Eight whom Cally shot) save Anders by killing a Three with a rock, and giving Anders back his gun (which Three was going to shoot him with). Note that it's that Sharon who breaks away from the other Eights to vote with the Sixes, and it's a Caprica leading the charge.

All of this fits really really neatly into the story of the Cylons up til now.

Yes: there have been little insurrections that have been growing. Definitely dissention in the Cylon ranks all along. But the part that I'd missed - and find most interesting - is that the 'patterns' weren't patterns at all: the growing sentience of the raiders, the question of free will among Cylons of all types.... I like the way it's coming together.

The Cylon story is an interesting one. And though I usually hate religion on television, I find that Six's religious angle is an interesting slant.

What do you think of Baltar having a Baltar in his head? I've never been sure why Baltar had Six in his head - or why she can appear and disappear at, apparently, her volition not his - I love poking at the possibilities, but no theory I've had so far quite explains the situation. Is this another kind of Cylon evolution?

I've been wondering about some king of time-loop. Seems improbably, but they can teleport in space, and if in space, why not in time?

After all, it seems as if Starbuck has recently had her own time-loop. Or something.
