That story would be wonderful enough if it were about someone we'd never heard of, but when you think it's John Barrowman - who is just so good in so many ways - it's all the better.

I resolve to do what I can for strangers in need. I realize what a difference it can make for people.

What a sweetie! And I bet all the grandchildren of these old ladies were jealous. :)

I hope I can remember to do that sort of nice thing for people I don't even know. It can mean so much - and it's easy to forget that, or rather, just not to think about it, not to notice when people need help.

He is just such a thoroughly nice person.

So is Loreena McKennitt. Good ethics, honest as the day is long...

Sorry. That was me! I somehow ended up posting that while not being logged in, thus it made me anonymous.

Yes, Aunty Brenda... Barrowman is just so good that if he didn't exist we'd have to invent him.

[And no problem about logging in anonymously - I've been known to do that, as you know.]

Show himself as a figurehead for gay rights. Sing with his mother in the Glasgow concert he gave. Autograph books, help young singers, support drama classes on schools, express his opinion when and as necessary in public venues... and give us lots and lots of Captain Jack!

He provides a role model for gay kids, too, which is so important: you too can have "happily ever after".

Plus? He really, really makes me smile.

Bless his beautiful self. This is the kind of heroism that anybody could do...I hope there are kids out there imitating Captain Jack. We do not have to live in a world that's every man for himself.

We do not have to live in a world that's every man for himself.

That's so true. And sometimes - because of fear, or being wrapped up in our own troubles, or not seeing around us clearly enough - it's easy to be insensitive to the needs of others, and it's so wonderful to see someone who -besides being the biggest show-off on the plant, maybe - sees when others are in distress and does something about it. And we've seen Barrowman do that time and again. He seems to have an instinct about it.

I am reminded of the chapter in Barrowman's autobiography about his roommate who killed herself. I think the distress of others touches him hard.

I find it rather inspirational myself. I've yet to figure out how I can help others more, but I intend to try.
