Windows XP.

I did something last night and now my start bar is vertical on the right-hand side of my monitor bar. I want to put it back on the bottom of my screen.

How do I do that?

Drag and drop it to the bottom. (I'm not joking.)

I tried. Couldn't seem to get it to work. Hold on, I'll try again.

Try clicking on an area that's free of icons, like around them, and dragging like that. It's a bit tricky to get it the first time, but it's not something going wrong.

Also, if it doesn't work at all, right-click on the taskbar and see if the check 'lock taskbar' is on (if so, remove it and try again)

Done! Thank you, all the comments were helpful.

It doesn't quite look like it did before, but that's fine. I can just let it sit there.

You should just be able to click and drag it back to the bottom. Click anywhere and literally just drag, and it should snap back to the bottom. If it won't go, right-click on a blank patch and check that you don't have "lock the taskbar" ticked. If it is, click on it to unlock it, then you'll be able to move it. You can lock it again the same way when you've got it where you want it!

I've done that before and utterly confused myself!

yes, it's totally confusing! Thanks to your instructions I've got it back to the bottom, though not the same shape as it was - that's okay, it's much better than it was.

Idiot machine.

Click on it and drag it down again ♥

Done, and it worked.

Sigh.

Sometimes I feel inept.

Groan. Yes, after numerous attempts to do it, that worked. Yay! And thank you.

Thank you. Labor vicit omnia (or something). I feel triumpant!

Labour wins all? My Latin, it is rusty. But yes. congratulations!

That is more or less what I meant to say! My Latin is pathetic and falling a part at the seams, but I do like to try it out from time to time.

Rather like my French. I keep meaning to use my LJ to practice writing it with, but so far only one posting. I must rant on this point and soon, or go mad.

I think my French is sort of rusty too, though I do get to practise it more.

I think with a dictionary, I could still translate texts on the level that I did four years ago, but we never even learnt how to form Latin sentences ourselves, so I'd fail at that one. Hm.

From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
Forming Latin sentences is hard. At least I find it so. I'd like to get to the point where I could do that, and I'd like to do something like conversational/colloquial Latin, though I've never even seen a course in it. But it would be fun. Maybe. Well, challenging.

I really should take conversational French, just to keep myself ... able.

Date: 2008-04-10 03:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com
It is indeed. I think it's mostly because you don't learn how to do that when they teach you Latin. Since it's a dead language and no one speaks it anymore, right? *headdesk* 's sort of sad. I wouldn't mind doing a conversational Latin class, either *grins*

French. Yeah. Must study the next three days. Exam on Monday. Ack! *hides*

I'll echo the click & drag, with a couple of extra bits of info.

You need to click on Task Bar blank space - which may mean exiting enough applications to have some. I have found that 'drag to the bottom center' helps. You'll want to drag is all the way to the bottom of the screen - it's going to look like nothing is happening, until all of the sudden it jumps into the new position.

Thanks for the description of what would happen. Which did. Eventually. I roll my eyes at the perversity of the screen.

But thank you - I am rescued!

You're welcome!

You say elsewhere it's doesn't look quite the same - it what way? If you haven't locked it, one of the things that can happen is that the ... let's say height can change? You hover your cursor very carefully on the top edge of the task bar, and it turns into a double-headed up-down arrow. Click and drag at that point, and you'll get another 'it jumps' behavior - it will get taller or shorter in increments of the height of the buttons that are there for running applications.

Well... it removed a bit as a detatchable window, and, the whole thing was too wide, and things that were tiny icons before had grown... It wasn't very cooperative, but after some poking I got it to settle down to its old shape. Minus a few things I never used anyway.

Oh Im so with you on this. The amount of times I've done this and panicked!!! But yes, the way to go is to drag it down. Good luck!

It's back where it should be - looking too wide and a little ragged, but that's all right.

Silly machine. Doesn't it know it's supposed to behave?

If you point at the edge of the taskbar, you should get a double-headed arrow. If you click that and drag downward, you can make it smaller again.

It took numerous attempts, but eventually that happened.

zomg your ubiquitous Jack icons are putting me off commenting on your posts! XD XD XD I'm really surprised at how much I *don't* like him now, and I don't really understand what my problem is. *shrug*

Anyway, I'm really sorry to hear about your fall, but hopefully you won't get bored while you sit around waiting for your foot to get better.

You dislike Jack so much? Oh dear! I'll try not to use his icons with your posts, though I love them enough that I really love using them in general. I know we have really different notions of what Jack is all about.

SO far, not bored. Sleeping too much to be bored.

To my amazement, yes! I'm completely off Torchwood, too. *shakes head* It's really really weird. I cannot get over how weird it is ; ) Don't worry too much about not using Jack icons around me, I'm not actually allergic or anything, but I do like that John icon and I still think Ianto is a cutie.

From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
Ianto is a cutie, and I can't argue with you there. And there's no reason anyone particularly has to like Torchwood or Captain Jack, though I think he's terrific. (Obviously.) There are lots of shows that everyone else loves that I dislike, so it all boils down to a matter of taste in the end.

I hate when this happens. The damned thing should be locked, but then it has other behaviours I dislike. And when it moves, the sequence of task bar, language button and all the other stuff is all messed up and takes a lot of fiddling to get back where they should be.
I gather you got it back in place by now. What is different about the shape?

Date: 2008-04-09 11:44 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
It doubled itself in width, and then piled a few things on top of each other, when they'd always been side by side in the past. No idea why.

Date: 2008-04-10 01:36 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ceruleancat.livejournal.com
That's easy. It simply means it chose a double width setting because it has a lot of items, and seems to prefer that to having the little collapsible menu for the quick-launch items or the task bar. You just need to push it lower just like you'd change any window size. Make sure the task bar is unlocked (right click on empty space to find the setting - which you've probably found out already), then move the cursor until you see the little double headed arrow, and pull it further down. It's delicate and annoying maneuver.

It's behaving at last. I hope it continues to!

Lock the task bar and see if anything about it bothers you. Most people don't mind.
And now you know what to do if it misbehaves again.

Man, since switching to Mac (still use PC at work) I feel like I live in two different worlds and get them confused sometimes. I'll try to think of how to do something in Mac or PC and use the function for the other.
