Great excitement in Hobbiton....
Jul. 30th, 2003 10:33 pmI just saw the preview trailer for The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King. I saw the TORN link to the trailer early this morning, but I can't access video at work - we don't have the right software - so I had to wait till tonight: now, that is an exercise in frustration and patience for a dedicated fanatic like me.
The TORN copy was gone by the time I had a chance to look there, and two alternate sites I tried were down, but thanks to

Oh my goodness.
I am entranced.
I've watched it a dozen times now (mesmerized!) and don't have very coherent thoughts about it. But.....

Is that Sam's hand holding the Ring in the first shot?

The forging of Anduril! One of my favourite things ever, and we get to see it. "Renewed shall be blade that was broken/Crownless again shall be king." Oooh.

The Paths of the Dead! Brrr.

Aragorn in the armour of Gondor, with the White Tree.

Faramir in the Council chamber of Gondor. My goodness. Quite breathtaking. I adore that man.

Looks like an intense Pippin/Merry scene.

Is that Dernhelm?

The Ringwraith looks scary.

Is that Shelob's lair? Where is Shelob?

I like the effect of the darkness - presumably the darkness of Mordor - with Frodo and Sam walking among backlit trees. Doesn't Frodo look suitably awful!

Wonderful glance between Gandalf and Pippin. That just happens to be one of my favourite relationships in the book, and I don't mean any slashy innuendo there: I love the way they interact, and the way Gandalf is extra tough on Pippin because he so clearly cares for him.

No Arwen in the trailer. Surprising.

Who is Gollum talking to?

Minas Tirith looks as good as I had hoped.

So... how many days until the movie opens?

Sam as Ringbearer... *happy sigh* I'm a huge Sam fan
So am I. So, I think, was Tolkien. I think Sam is pivotal - and such a sweetheart.
wants to get a cat and name it Samwise
Beautiful name! So Tolkienesque, but with subtle meaning, especially as he is usually called "Sam". But in Tolkien, wisdom is found where you wouldn't expect it, and exists most in those who think they don't have it. Sam's faithful love of Frodo is just perfect; and Sam is so exquisitely brave, but never sees his own courage.
I always thought Anduril was an important symbol; I'm not sure what the movie has set up but I would guess that its forging will be part of Aragorn's assumption of kinghood.
Aragorn in Gondorian armour. White tree. Words fail me.
Re Faramir: I think fans of the movie are more divided on this issue than anything else. I adored movie-Faramir; I suddenly understood (and respected) the character more than I ever had. In the book, I had seen him as a substitute for Aragorn (with Eowyn) and a substitute for Boromir (in Gondor). In the movie, he was himself, and a worthy successor/ally to both - and Eowyn's fate suddenly didn't seem so sad or disappointing.
So, see, I'm already convinced. I don't know if they'll be able to convince you or not!
