Torchwood: Jack's office...
Mar. 14th, 2008 09:03 pmI don't have a very good memory, especially a visual memory. Ever since they said in "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang" that Gwen had redecorated the Hub, I've been trying to figure out what has changed. It seems generally neater and less cluttered. What, I asked myself, is missing - besides a hand in a jar?
Seems to me that what's missing is the Doctor's 3D glasses on Jack's lampshade, and his 1941 binoculars, and - other memorabilia of the Doctor. I think the televisions from Doctor Who "The Idiot's Lantern" are still there - but I'm not entirely sure.
Can anyone with sharper eyes, a better memory, or good screencaps tell me? What still remains in the Hub, that belonged to the Doctor?
(Besides Jack himself, of course.)
Added for comparisons's sake:
Jack's desk - series 1

Jack's desk - series 2

cross-posted to torch_wood and tw_timeline.
Screencaps are from The Institute.

Date: 2008-03-15 12:01 pm (UTC)On Jack's desk there's still the coral (baby TARDIS!), and quite a lot of bits and pieces. There was a photo in Torchwood magazine. There's all sorts on there. The televisions are still there. But the glasses aren't hung on the lamp any more - new lamps, all curvy, no hanging places. on the plus side there's actual places to sit for people that aren't Jack, although there's still no sofa. I don't know where fanfic gets the sofa. It's invisible, clearly.

Date: 2008-03-15 05:59 pm (UTC)Right! Thanks so much for the rundown.
There's a wall removed in Jack's office, and his desk moved so it's next to the window that used to be in a seperate room, so it's bigger.
I love that window, if you mean the round one. Though I must confess I was eying it and thinking about the logistics of office sex.
On Jack's desk there's still the coral (baby TARDIS!),
Which I love with a passion. I wonder why Gwen left it: she presumably doesn't know what it is. But she probably knows it was important to Jack, and he was tending it, and she might guess it has something alien about it. My interpretation of their tech is that Jack used his wristband to insert furture software into their computer system to locate alien life-forms, so that when he left with his wristband attached, they still had those capabilities. And probably programmed it into Tosh's handheld tricorder.
quite a lot of bits and pieces
Yes, but while the 3D glasses were quite visible before, I haven't been able to spot them this series. Gwen might have trashed them, not realizing they were special Gallifreyan 3D glasses. Or... she might have put them somewhere for safekeeping, if she and her gadgets could tell they were (a) of alien origin and (b) unknown function.
I don't know where fanfic gets the sofa. It's invisible, clearly.
Perhaps Ianto brings it in with him. [g]
There was a photo in Torchwood magazine.
Which I would so love to see. If you ever see the picture online, let me know, okay? I have been trying desperately to get my hands on that magazine but the distributors here don't seem to be able to get it and I haven't found a place I can order it online - they won't sell it to Canadians. Whether this is a copyright issue (probably) or simply that they don't find it worth their time, I don't know. I am trying not to be bitter and grumpy about it, but really, I am bitter and grumpy ...!
It isn't just that I want to see that photo - though I do - I want a new set of beautiful Torchwood pictures for my bathroom decor, and I've come up with nothing.

Date: 2008-03-16 02:16 am (UTC)Because they are better lit than the pictures of the Hub are on Torchwood we can see many things better. And I am overflowing with questions that have no answers. Love seeing the really good look at Jack's desk! And the desk/window angle is not as I'd remembered, which is a good thing to know for fanfic.
Many, many thanks for these great links!

Date: 2008-03-16 05:03 am (UTC)The last 3 pictures on this page http://www.fwolfling.com/porto/guides/hub/jack.html
show the glass wall that has been removed to extend Jack's office and the round window that his desk now sits by, the desk having been turned by 180 ish degrees so Jack's back is now to the rest of the hub instead of the desk facing it which is not a problem, unless you were hoping to hide under the desk. The railing you see in the third from bottom pic is the one on the steps that lead up to the office from the lift area - the entrance Ianto uses in To The Last Man before he gets to Jack's desk, can see that area in this (http://torchwood.time-and-space.co.uk/coppermine/albums/2x03TheLastMan/last8/2x03TheLastMan-01135.jpg) pic, as well as getting a good view of the desk, whereas this (http://torchwood.time-and-space.co.uk/coppermine/albums/2x01/Kiss10/2x01KissKissBangBang-01594.jpg) one gives you the view of the other side of the office (with magpie tellies and the safe).
Another thing that has changed is that the old boardroom is now the hothouse for alien flora.
HTH.

Date: 2008-03-16 03:11 pm (UTC)And studying the map is very interesting - I see that some things are/were not where I was picturing them at all. Great to have visual reference.
