A special birthday today. Not a friend. Not even an acquaintance. Today is John Barrowman's birthday: he's 41 years old.

And of course I wish him a very happy day, and a happy year. He's likely to have it, given the current success of his every endeavour.

So: my reasons for loving John Barrowman:
1. Captain Jack Harkness
2. His sense of humour, outrageous as it is
3. His positive work for gay causes and for dogs
4. His singing, particularly with John Barrowman Swings Cole Porter, but for all his recorded music
5. His attitude to life, his interest in many things, his approach to his work and his belief in entertainment as a value of its own
7. The work he has done to encourage young actors and singers in the entertainment industry
8. His honesty in being openly gay, open in his opinions and concerns
9. His generosity with his fans and the public
10. His glee in colourful costumes
11. His entertaining book
12. His professionalism

13. His profound respect and love for his family.

15. The fact that after twenty-five years in the business, it still makes him squee.
16. His willingness to try anything.
17. His sincere love of the privileges and responsibilities of fame.
18. His entire lack of guile.
19. His faith.
20. His beauty.

His love for his adorable boyfriend

They are so very cute together. And so very "together".

His complete lack of an inner censor

Which gives us incredible entertainment value. The man has no shame at all. (And no reason he should have! I love it!)

His teeth

Though not in the alien-vampire-shapechanger scene in "Something Borrowed".

His profound respect and love for his family.

Oh, yes.

His probably complete inability to lie.

Yes.

The fact that after twenty-five years in the business, it still makes him squee.

And loudly.

His willingness to try anything

Even, for example, flying in RAF fighter jets when he has a fear of flying. And then loving it even though he was sick afterwards.

His sincere love of the privileges and responsibilities of fame

Yes - his appreciation of the former and his careful attention to the latter.

His entire lack of guile

It's amazing.

His faith

Yes. He wears it well.

His beauty

Oooh yes... And yet it's beauty with character, not just blank fashion-model perfection of features.

There was a happy moment some weeks ago on television: a boy of about 9 or 10 at a stage school was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up. His answer?

"Like John Barrowman."

There's hope for the next generation!

Oh, my goodness, yes - that really is being ready for what the 21st century ought to be.

I think there's few famous people that when you learn more about them, you wouldn't mind being them.

John Barrowman? He's a good man. There seems to be a shortage of those in the public eye.

Yes. And so often, when I read about celebrities, there are things about them I admire, and things about them I don't like - a mixed bag like most human beings. But Barrowman? It's as if even his weaknesses are strengths.

He has such a lack of pretension - even with a large ego. How does he do that?

...By being so unselfish with his talents and his attitudes, of course.

There seems to be a shortage of those in the public eye.

That is so sadly true. He's a rare one.

11 Mar 66 - he's a Fire Horse

The Horses are the physically active, oratory and quick-witted athletes of the zodiac. Charming, independent, and "decisive," the Horse prefers to be 'on the move' with places to go and people to see. Natural leaders, idealistic and humanitarian in character, the Horse is a gifted speaker and strong communicator. Elegant, witty, and charming, those born into Horse years are difficult to defeat in an argument, and always make a persuasive case. Often successful in politics or public speaking, the cheerful and friendly Horse is effusive and needs absolute freedom to maneuver through life’s pastures. This independent 7th sign of the zodiac needs a mate who stimulates their mind and appreciates their wit. Rejuvenating time of day for Horses is during their own high-noon hours, between 11:00am - 1:00pm.

The nature of Fire is to spread, and to urge outcome, to resolve. Fire manifests and expresses in the natural rhythm of the heart, which pulsates the blood. The Fire element will multiply the individual signs energies. Those born into a year ruled by the Fire element, will display above average qualities of leadership, passion and dynamic aggression. Fire element people are doers, and attract others with their fervor and radiance. The Fire element arouses, changes, and converts. For those of the Fire element, their brand of flame may be a mystical spark. The Fire element imparts much energy and can cause each sign to be impatient in pursuit of goals. Fire is rapid, and can also consume the persons energies, to relax and respect your body's natural rhythms. Fire element persons, no matter what their calling, will always remain fiercely individualistic. Fire's physical organs are the Heart and Small intestine; it's flavor is Bitter. Fires color is Red and corresponds to the season of Summer and heat.

So -- you who know him, do you agree?

Hmm. This all sounds absolutely right, but his birthdate was 11 Mar 67 - you meant that, right?

Thanks for looking this up! I meant to, but haven't had time yet. I hadn't got beyond 'Pisces' - and haven't delved into the significance of that, either.

the physically active, oratory and quick-witted athletes of the zodiac

Great start. I've never seen a person with more energy - he says he has so much energy that he has trouble sleeping at night, and uses Nytol to make himself relax. Oratory? Quick wit? He's as good with a funny come-back as anyone I've ever heard, which is why they love him on interview shows.

Charming

To fans, certainly. Probably to just about everyone. To a fault.

prefers to be 'on the move' with places to go and people to see

Which is why he has something scheduled or planned or happening morning, noon and night. Why he did two performances of Aladdin on the day he got married. Why he appears in other shows (or on stage) the minute Torchwood and Doctor Who stop filming.

I don't know about rejuvenating time of day....

The Fire element will multiply the individual sign's energies.

Meaning that all that exuberance and humour and showmanship will be accentuated and multiplied? Woo. Heaven help us all. And: yes, true.

And individualistic? Absolutely. Obviously he always goes his way. When he started out in college - where he was studying voice and music - he hated it because they wanted him to sing what they wanted him to sing, not the show tunes he preferred - he quit after first term. When he was in "Titans" (or one of those American shows) the producers wanted him to appear less gay and stop hanging out in public with Scott. He was furious and would have quit, but the show was cancelled.

I'd say: Impressive stuff, that Chinese astrology.

Chinese astrology may be impressive, but this Chinese is not a mathematician. Okay, so he's a Fire Goat - even better! *g*

The Goats are the artists in temperament and in character. These changeable free spirits, love social gatherings, stimulating conversation, and interesting people. "Propriety" and a beautiful environment are important to their souls. Gentle in spirit, Goats desire a peaceful spot to exist undisturbed and un-obligated. Creative, sensitive and kind, those souls born into Goat years are warmhearted, disorganized, and extremely vulnerable. They are capricious, work when least expected to, and are never reached by being pressured or by a heavy hand. This 8th position in the zodiac is intelligent, sometimes insecure, and generous to a fault. This good Samaritan has a soft heart towards those less fortunate whether a homeless puppy or a needy friend, and needs a strong partner able to take the reins and handle their usually fortunate finances. Goats gather strength during their own early afternoon hours, between 1:00pm - 3:00pm.

Yes, that sounds right!

This good Samaritan has a soft heart towards those less fortunate whether a homeless puppy

...Hee! What a great 'random example' - about a man who takes in homeless dogs and loves (and spoils them) then with a totally unabashed adoration.

or a needy friend

And this could easily include the talented youth he encourages, of the people he meets and helps. There is a moving and heartfelt section in his book about a roommate who killed herself - she was a friend from childhood and he blames her parents for neglecting her emotionally.

needs a strong partner able to take the reins and handle their usually fortunate finances.

Thank goodness Scott is not a show biz guy.

Fire element people are doers, and attract others with their fervor and radiance.

Very true.

Fire element persons, no matter what their calling, will always remain fiercely individualistic.

It's hard to imagine Barrowman being otherwise.

Excellent!
