I collect comic books. I have collected comic books for a very long time.

I got a message from my friend Grant the other day, asking if I would like some comic book storage boxes he didn't need any more. You bet, I said. He said he had about half a dozen to spare. Great, said I.

Then he said there were a few more than he thought, maybe a dozen.

Even better, said I.

So he brought them over tonight. A dozen? The man's a scientist: you'd think he could count boxes. There are more like two dozen. Maybe more. He just kept bringing them out of his car. One after another after another.

It's going to be a long, long time before I need to buy another box.

perhaps the unit "box" is to blame. You think it is a nice, straightforward one, a physical object. But perhaps it is more like a certain amount of comics. And one box can take up more than one physical box?

Like a TARDIS - ? More of them on the inside than the outside, so to speak?

Ah, well, they're half packed into my apartment now (mostly still empty) and the other half unfolded in my storage locker downstairs. No longer boxes, just... piles of cardboard.

I like her, too. Here's my question: Why did EvsDropper warn Donna and leave her that gun unless he/she wanted the Company to notice Donna's potential? Elle and Thompson, Jr. clearly didn't realize the full extent of her power up until that point. I'm wondering if Evs wanted Donna inside the Company for his/her own use down the line.
From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
It certainly does read like a set-up. I've been trying to think what, in particular, Donna's power might be particularly good for. Something stealthy, I suppose.

Good one! I liked, "There's only one way out of this. Bring down the company." And: "From now on, I'm doing this my way." Cue ominous music.
From: [identity profile] raissad.livejournal.com
Me too. I also liked that Thompson, Jr. hated Bennet for killing his Dad. I was wondering when the writers would remember that bit of internal logic.

I'm wondering one thing, though. Apart from the fact that Bennet is a popular regular character, why would they keep him around after testing the blood and calling off Claire? He has no special ability of his own that they need to harness, and the tactical acumen he does possess will like prove to be a problem. There are other ways to deal with Claire. Logically, they should kill him. I'm exstatic they haven't, but they should.
From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
Maybe they have some use in mind for him? Maybe they think his strategic abilities will be of use to them. Somehow.
From: [identity profile] raissad.livejournal.com
That's what I'm hoping, because this chapter made it clear that only some problem agents are killed, implying specific protocols.

Now all you need is someone willing to create a catalog for the comics you already have ...

[And yes, I'd be willing to volunteer ... when I have the time.]

Though I haven't been organized to put many comics in my 'new' boxes, they've been very handy for those stacks of books and video-tapes I was needing a place for. Comic book boxes are wonderful storage for all sorts of things.

And such a manageable size, too.

Remind me to tell you about carrying a box around DragonCon a few years ago, with fun accoutrements.

Okay, it was the mid-90s, & we had a couple staying with us who later became known as the Vampire People because, not matter what we did, it was never enough. They had been staying for DragonCon & wanted to know if their hall-costume won, which meant I had to stay late on Sunday to find out [they had to drive a long way home & left early], even though it was the same day we had received a summons [with the then-usual] short notice to a gathering with my spouse's family. We were supposed to be there at 5, & closing ceremonies weren't until after 4. So, I was stuck downtown at the con. We only had the one car, so I had no place or way to stash stuff.

And there was stuff. I bought a large, matted Mark Poole print, for which he kindly included a plastic bag, for which I constructed a carrying-strap by knotting together 10 or so of the sandwich baggies I'd brought. In the dealers' room, I actually found a book dealer [as rare at DragonCon as a plot in some types of porn--yes, LKH, I'm looking at you] with lots of paperbacks for sale. I bought 50-60, which fit neatly into a comic book box. So, picture me, 2' square con bag over one shoulder, work of art over the other shoulder, carrying the full box of books like a sacrificial offering. I had to go around the con like that *all day*, up & down the escalators which were narrower than the box. [My arms are tired in retrospect just reading about it.]

And, after all the fuss & bother, the vampire people didn't win anything, but we don't do stuff with them any more, so that's sort of a win in itself. [They were lovely folks, really, very interesting & creative, but very demanding & clingy. They've since made other friends, so I don't feel as guilty about putting some distance between us.]

Aaah, conventions. Yes, that's quite a story - I can just imagine it. Comic book boxes are akward at the best of times, even when empty. Maybe some people... don't realize what they're asking?

Well, they certainly didn't know about the awkward timing of the activity with the in-laws, & they may have assumed I would've already bought any books I wanted. They probably simply didn't think about it.

Nowadays, when I do Dragon, I don't buy as much stuff [relative lack of book dealers makes that easy]. I also make sure to have a car within 3-4 blocks, so I can drop off stuff. This may become more important. After several years of successfully avoiding them at DragonCon, this year there was a critical failure, & they caught up with me, in the far-away hotel I never go to.

Not only did they keep me standing talking over an hour [thus causing me to miss the panel I'd come all that long, intricate way to go to], it also put me in the vicinity of Larry Smith [Lois' bookdealer buddy from Ohio], who had a *huge* display, so I once again wound up carrying heavy books around all day. Still, if the price of getting to look at the yummy books is the increased risk of running into the Vampires, I may have to give it a pass [not to mention, I'm not sure of the elaborate, overpass route to get there].

Lack of book dealers at a con always makes it easy on the pocketbook, but it's also sort of disappointing, becuase I love browsing different dealers. You never know what you'll find.

I've never had a car at a con; I usually have a hotel room for purchases. Hopefully close to the con.

In this case, my hotel room was my own bed, some 10 miles down the road--very comfortable for sleeping, but for stashing, not so much.

I miss lots of the fun from being too cheap to stay on-site, though. Being safe to drive home requires significantly more cognition than staggering around the halls to room parties or hanging out filking.

Ah, the filkers' life.... Room parties are always fun. And the filking, costuming, late-night panels and so on. Yes. That's all part of it.
