A "Pirates of the Caribbean" Jack/Will snippet....

~ ~ ~

On weekdays, Will Turner went walking at dawn. It was good exercise, to go up to the citadel and back again, before the traffic and the heat of the day made the enterprise unfeasible. Children would wave to him from the windows, knowing when he went by. He waved back, smiling, unless he was lost in thought. They were used to that, too.

The dogs on his route didn't bark, except in greeting.

Mrs. Appleby, opening up the bakery, usually gave him a big smile. "Good morning to you, Will Blacksmith," she'd say, and, laughing, he'd say, "Your pies smell delicious this morning, Mrs. Baker." It was a ritual between them, and she would remark to her daughter Annabella that the boy had a fine smile and such good prospects, it was pity he preferred that grand young woman Miss Swann to Annabella or her sister.

"Yes, Ma," Annabella would say, looking wistful.

Unaware of this oft-repeated conversation, Will went daily up to the walls that protected Port Royal from pirates, the French, and other predators. He looked over the sea, day after day, and after pausing a moment or two - sometimes longer, with a thoughtful look in his eye - he walked back down the causeway to the town and back to the blacksmith's shop. Under his control now, it was less and less a regular smithy, more and more an emporium where the finest swords in the Caribbean were created.

There he practised his swordsmanship, day after day, just in case he might meet up with a pirate he wanted to kill. The thought always made him smile, because, of course, he had consorted with pirates and hadn't killed any. He wasn't likely to. He practised with the sword because he believed that a man who aspired to create beautiful swords that were the best the art could produce, must also know exactly how to use them.

He practised because next time he met Captain Jack Sparrow, he wanted to be in top form.

He walked to the citadel walls overlooking the ocean because it was good exercise and he liked the fresh air in the morning.

He stood looking out at the water, because he hoped he would see, one day, the sails of the Black Pearl coming over the horizon, and Jack Sparrow coming back to Port Royal. Will was proud of his business, and his lovely fiancee, and his skill with a sword, and the good name he had made for himself: but he would have sold his soul and anything else to see Jack Sparrow again.

Jack Sparrow, the only man who could best him at sword-play, or make him laugh at a quip, or anger him beyond bearing.

Jack Sparrow, whose glittering eyes and flashing smile made his heart speed.

Jack Sparrow, the only man he cared about more than his own good name.

Jack Sparrow, who cared nothing for respectability, or the law, or the safety of the town, or the careful management of a business. Jack knew about other things: the price of happiness, and the meaning of freedom, and the promise of a fresh horizon.

So every day, Will Turner looked at the sea and hoped.

He knew Jack Sparrow would come back. The only question in his mind was: when?

Getting them together is going to be fun!

And thanks for the comment.

It's so cool that you have you LJ now too.

And...?

Aha, something is starting to sprout within your fertile imagination. If this isn't the start to a long work, I'll be shivered.

I liked the bit about "the walls that protected Port Royal from pirates, the French, and other predators."

And what a light, easy touch you show with this.

Thank you - what nice comments.

Yeah: these guys have infiltrated my head, and I can't get rid of them. Not that I want to.

It's like going back to Hornblower, but with a huge corkscrew twist.

Excuse me? What was that you said? You think *I* might save *you* from menage thoughts?

Whatever made you think that?

Dear girl - go for it! I love your threesomes. Yes, please. Don't look to *me* for discouragement, this is the wrong place entirely.

Smiling happily in anticipation, I am.

I have to 'get a bead' on Norrington (and give him a first name!), but the thought definitely intrigues...heh! That story I recommended from PoTCSlash had me thinking naughty Norrington thoughts....happy sigh....

Thoughts are good things. If I have any insights into Norrington on repeat viewings, I'll try to share them with you.

I need to see it again - maybe this weekend. I sort of like going in the direction that Norrington shared some sort of past with Jack, or he leaves the Navy or something. It's difficult to think of him being commodore in Port Royal and having it off with Jack, other than as a one-off or something. Too dangerous for Jack ;-) OTOH, if I try hard, I can see Will and Norrington being attracted to each other as they both realize that marrying Elizabeth would just be a cover and a bid for 'respectibility', when they reall hanker after other men. And after a while, I can sort-of see that menage...it's hovering out there, just beyond reach (g). I have to give it some serious thought.

At last my LJ is working again - and I can see your comment.

I saw it tonight. Great fun.

Dangerous for Jack - right. But that can make it, at least at first, more fun to play with.

I can just see your ideas fermenting!

Hmm. Are you saying you see Jack/Norrington slash and Will/Norrington slash but not Jack/Will? Nothing wrong with this being the case, of course!

I would have to work to really get into Jack/Will...at least, until I read some more that people have written. I just didn't see any chemistry between the actors. There were a few bits of chemistry between the characters, but nothing has really jumped up and bit me, as far as Jack/Will being hot, to me. And interestingly enough, since I'm usually alone in my slashy opinions, a fair cross section of fans that I've come across discussing PotC have said that they don't see any Jack/Will sparks either, even though they wanted to see them and were looking for them.

I'm definitely someone for whom the actor is important. I don't "just" slash the characters (as many fen do), the actors' vibes matter to me. I get sexy vibes from Johnny Depp and Jack Davenport both (having seen Davenport in both drama and comedy, both sexy roles), but not from Orlando. One person was describing his performance as wooden, and I have to admit that's the way it struck me. This time, I've actually been quite surprised that some people see it like I do - I'm not used to that! (g) I didn't feel this way about him in LoTR, BTW - I found him sexier as Legolas, although still not really my type. He comes across as too...detached, I think, and I don't feel that there's a fire underneath.

As far as pairings....I can see Jack/Norrington, oddly enough (because I want to, for one thing and that always defies logic) and tend to see Will/Norrington as a 'second-best' kind of thing, commiserating with each other, since both want Jack (and both realizing that they don't REALLY want Elizabeth).

I think that Jack would want either one of them...Jack w

I don't know what happened there! Here's the rest of that entry....

I think that Jack would want either one of them...Jack would want anything or anyone who could get him off... (eg) I think there would be mutual respect between Jack and Will, as far as courage and fighting ability.

I do have an emerging backstory between Jack and Norrington, but don't want to give it all away in case I actually decide to write it. If I did make it a menage, it'd end up novella length, I think! Let's just say Jack and the commodore have known each other since they were midshipman age - and Jack hasn't always been a pirate.

Yes. I saw plenty of Jack/Will sparks, so I don't exactly have that problem!

I don't "just" slash the characters (as many fen do), the actors' vibes matter to me.

Me too, but these things are always open to interpretation.

I found Jack Davenport sexy enough and I liked him, but I loved the interplay between Jack and Will and nothing else in the movie competed with that for me - unless maybe Elizabeth's role with either of them, which I also liked.

Re Orlando Bloom: I didn't feel this way about him in LoTR, BTW - I found him sexier as Legolas

Yes, so did I, but then I find Legolas very, very sexy. It isn't that I found Will Turner sexy in himself, but I found him sexy in his interaction with Jack Sparrow. Mind you, everything and anything in that movie was sexy with regard to Jack: it was just the way he struck me.

But for me, Will had plenty of fiery spark. Which is not to argue a case, just to comment on your comments.

Don't take this to mean I don't want to see what you do with Norrington! Especially if you do it with Norrington/Jack, since I like the character contrast there.

Absolutely. Chemistry is awfully difficult to try and explain or rationalize, it just "is", and hormones are valid creatures no matter who they point us towards.

I found Jack Davenport sexy enough and I liked him

I think it'd be difficult to get much of a sense of him as himself, if you haven't seen him in anything else, because of the wig. It totally changes his appearance. He strikes me as rather intense, which Norrington wasn't exactly! ;-)

I too liked Elizabeth. I think I appreciated her role more than Will. [This is not a commentary on Orlando.] I liked Will, but I guess I never more than liked him. He just didn't excite me all that much.

Mind you, everything and anything in that movie was sexy with regard to Jack: it was just the way he struck me.

Oh, YES MA'AM! (eg)

Me too! Hehe.... And visualizing them lying in each other's arms....(is it warm in here?)
