And the picture is of my favourite - the iris.

You Are a Purple Flower

A purple flower tends to represent success, grace, and elegance.

At times, you are faithful like a violet.

And other times, you represent luxury, like a wisteria.

And more than you wish, you find yourself heartbroken like a lilac.

Well, about three hours ago I saw this and had a go and found out I was a white flower of some sort. And then I started in on some of the other quizzes and found that they are never ending and couldn't seem to stop. At last, I did this one and decided it was time to quit, having come full circle:

It will come as no surprise to you that I got the same results from the same quiz. Let's hear it for hippiedom!

I... like blue. *he said in a tiny voice*

Cat got same result.
And why are irises "wise"? And don't they come in all sorts of colours? (http://home.swbell.net/keisling/Medians.html)

Nothing wrong with liking blue. I love blue. Flowers or other things.

Irises do come in all sorts of colours, and I had thought that their original basic colour was blue, maybe just because the irises that grew in the garden of the house where I grew up (using "garden" in a very loose sense) were blue. Still. Purple irises are lovely. (I see that 'iris' comes from the Greek for 'rainbow', which is nicely fitting.)

And wise? I don't know why, but if roses can mean love, there's no reason irises couldn't mean wisdom. From one website (http://www.proflowers.com/flowerguide/flowermeanings/iris-meanings.aspx): "Through its intricate history, the meanings of the iris has come to include faith, hope, and wisdom."

Actually, depending on the species of genus Iris you're speaking of, the "original" color is either purple or -- less frequently -- yellow. Hybridizers have done some incredible things with them over the last century or so.

Irises are my favorite flower, too. Esp. the big, blowsy bearded ones that smell like fruit punch.

I love them all - but there's a kind of tiny iris where the deep purple petals look like the arms of a propeller. Those are my favourites! Rather like in your icon picture...

The iris in my icon (and in my garden -- I took that picture a couple of weeks ago, and while that particular blossom is gone, there are more [g]) is Iris reticulata, a variety of iris that grows from bulbs (as opposed to rhizomes like the bearded kinds (Iris germanica) do. They're one of the earliest flowers to bloom in the spring, which is one reason to adore them. In my garden (they're planted in a very sheltered place that tends to collect heat) they generally start blooming in the middle of February.

I think that's the kind I was trying to describe - thanks so much for giving me a name for it! Iris reticulata! How wonderful.

I've never seen them as early as February (mostly because we still have many feet of snow, a flower would have to be on stilts to reach the sunlight through it all). But in March or April they're among the first sping flowers, and I love them.

Iris reticulata. Must remember that.

I'm fond of several early spring floweres - daffodills, too. Tulips: not so much, but the Ottawa Tulip Festival is lovely. Trilliums too, but I don't think they bloom till May.

The "reticulata" means "netted" because the bulbs have a netlike surface on them, btw [g]. They've been hybridized to come in colors from red-violet to baby blue to navy -- I have three colors of them myself, and would like to get more.

I adore daffodils, too. Western Washington grows more bulbs than the Dutch do, and the city I live in has a Daffodil Festival (http://www.daffodilfestival.net/). Up north of Seattle they grow tulips by the acre -- Image (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mmegaera/456093971/) and have a festival every year. I do love where I live [g].

I'd love to see a daffodil festival! How wonderful that would be.

If I could have plants and a garden, I'd like irises. Failing that - everyone in my neighbourhood has a lovely garden, and it's jun to just wander the streets in the spring, seeing what they have. Now this year, I'll go back to the house where they have iris reticulata in their garden, and feel smug because I know what they're called, thanks to you.

Heck, I like to do that and I have a garden [g]. A tiny one, though.

I have a potted orchid on my windowsill, if that counts.

But it's a great flowery neighbourhood. Not only do my neighbours try to outdo themselves for gorgeous gardens, we're right next to the Canal and the historical land that the National Capital Commission landscapes lavishly for us for free. (well, for taxes.)

Of course it counts [g]. So does your neighborhood. It sounds lovely.

It really is a great neighbourhood - I'm looking forward to wandering around with a camera when these mounds of snow are gone and we have flowers again.

The phrase "iris retuculata" scans to the tune of "calculatis eliminatis" from Dr. Seuss' "The Cat In The Hat" [the real one].

Hey, you knew I'd get some music in there somewhere.

Red! Whoo, nice. Dramatic.

I never relate well to red: I'm not sure why. I certainly like red roses.
