Another delicious comic book....
Jul. 24th, 2003 10:39 pmOkay, so I'm into Marvel Mutants and I've always liked Mystique for a lot of reasons: she's smart, she's resourceful, she's interesting, and she's bi. I tend to like shapechangers - maybe because the Fantastic Four story, "The Return of the Super-Skrull", was the first Marvel comic I ever read, and it was mind-boggling to me. Or maybe I liked it because it was about a shape-changer.
In any case, I picked up the Mystique comic because I like the character and the concept, and I'm delighted I did. I just read issue 4, "Drop Dead Gorgeous", and I loved it. First the art was magnificent - who is Jorge Lucas? New to me, and (in this issue) doing some of the best art I've seen for a long time. I love the way he draws Mystique as herself: she's a real as a blue-skinned shapechanger could be.
And the writing by Brian K. Vaughan - delightfully witty. For instance:
Shortpack: You're a wanted criminal?
Mystique: Well, not in every country. I'm pretty sure I smoothed things over in Mauritania.
Example.
