fajrdrako: ([Torchwood] - Jack)

I have fannish success to report. I subscribed to zTélé, a Québecois TV station that is showing Torchwood in French, and this evening I taped it, and watched part of it. It was the first episode, "Tout Change".

It's a thrill.

The voices aren't bad. I quite like Gwen's. My first impression is that the voice does sound rather like Gwen's voice, though without a Welsh accent. That is... if there's a Welsh accent, my French isn't quite good enough to detect it, or to understand how a Welsh accent would sound in French.

The difficult voice is Jack's, of course, because not many people have a voice as beautiful as John Barrowman's. But though he doesn't have the voice, this actor does have the intonation dight, and it works very well.

Made a good first impression, anyway.

Bring on the ptérosaurien.

I'd imnagine the French equivalent of a Welsh accent would be a Breton accent - but isn't there a bit of breizh in joual?

Is the dubbing done in Parisien or Quebecois?

European French, I believe. The station is from Quebec but the show is from France.

as for the accent, like a French person who learned to spek English in Wales.

I've known a guy from Aberdeen who learned to speak Dutch in the Achterhoek, a part of the Netherlands where they speak in dialect. He spoke funny Dutch, with an Scottisch Achterhoek accent.

When in highschool a friend went to some kind of do, she stood in a que behind a man and heard him talk. She approached him, 'excuse me, where are you from? you see I ask because I think you have the most wonderful accent and I might want to go and live there and acquire the same accent.' His reply was that he had done a lot of traveling and moving house all over the globe and his accent had picked things up, so to speak.

Funny things, accents.

Yes. I am really bad at 'hearing' accents - I either don't notice them, or don't understand them, or can't figure out where they're from. I have much more trouble with some American accents than with British accents, where usually the problem is in the intonation rather than the accent itself.

...and unlike the CBC, Ztélé kept Owen's m/m kiss scene.

CBC also cut the 'oestrogen in the rain' scene. I think this is abominable. Yay for Ztélé for doing it right!

Ai! now I need to see them all in French, too! Such a torment that will be. Can't wait.

I was, as you said it, thinking also, how does a Welsh accent sound in French? Good question.

How does an American accent sound in French, hm?

And I'm thinking we really need to get organized and submit our pleas for the return of the pterodactyl... can't let the show get too grounded in everyday reality, now, can we? I'll write a letter if you will.

So far, I'm really just concentrating on understanding what they say - which isn't difficult, as the actors all have very good articulation. I'll think about accents more when I've watched a few times.

Ztélé is rerunning S1 of New Who in the middle of the night as well, if you want to watch that. And airing lots of other shows: Stargate (SG1 & SGA), The Collector, Supernatural, etc.

Yes, they have a good selections of shows. I don't like Stargate (either version) and Supernatural is much too scary for me, in the wrong ways. But I am certainly taping Doctor Who, which is wonderful. I'm thinking of taping Alias, though I'm not sure where I'd find time to watch - I can only do my exercises for so long!

At this rate, I'll become very fit. (Hah! Wouldn't that be nice?)
