This morning on the bus, the gentleman standing beside me answered his cell phone.

"Hi," he said. "I'm in Ottawa. Yeah, Ottawa. I can't get over how much snow they have here."

Right. Me too.

It snows it Ottawa -- Who knew?

Seriously, where did he think he was, Ft. Lauderdale?

I wondered where he was from. Presumably not Montreal.

We certainly don't have any snow. But ice?!?! As soon as there has been frost a few hours Dutch people start to mumble things about ice and skating. (After a few days people longingly mention the possibillity of an Elfstedentocht (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elfstedentocht))
Empty meaddows and cover them with water, so it freezes over and you have an outdoor skating rink. My sister hopes to skate on one on friday. Skating on canals or even ditches is not an option yet, the ice would not be able to carry people.
But some weeks ago my sister had a snowballfight with her boyfriend when she was at his place in Franktfurt.
Good luck with your struggle with the elements.

The canal isn't plowed, though I suspect that it must be almost frozen enough for skating - if it isn't already. On Sunday I was at a party and found myself sitting on a sofa between two men who were discussing the state of the city skating rinks (both indoors and outdoors) and the possibilities of using them on the weekend. Yup, it does look as if skating season has started.

I've been thinking about getting my snowshoes out. Maybe tomorrow.

You mentioned how much snow. I myself have been amazed that we (in SW PA) have had three lasting snowfalls already this month, which in recent years has not happened much. How much snow do you have, measured in something useful, eh? Is it up to your knee? Is it up to the holster Mal Reynolds wears slung low? Is it up to Zoe's cleavage? Is it up to the secret place where Captain Jack had that pulse-pistol which he produced during his memorable makeover experience? Or is it maybe all the way up to the length of time it's going to be before I finally get to see the DVD set of Battlestar Galactica season three (which, when transposed from time-units to units of height-measure, might very well be... gnaarrk)?

Just wondering!

As to how deep the snow is... sitting in a warm, dry room at the moment, I'm not sure. If you're standing by a snowbank or snowdrift, it might be over your head. On the average lawn, somewhere between... hmm. Calf-deep and knee-deep? The tip of Mal's gun might get wet. It would challenge Toshiko's boots.

Is it up to Zoe's cleavage?

Only if she's lying down!

You need a TARDIS. I need a TARDIS. We all need a TARDIS.

Oh, and by the way... it's snowing out there now. All snow-depth estimates are open to revision by the minute.

Well, memories differ. I'd say Zoe's cleavage can, and has, reach almost as far down as Toshiko's boots are high... and, believe me, that's one image a person could pin a drabble to, if any there ever was. Forgive my two grammatical oopsies, in there, btw.

Snow here is... fading fast. Today, again, about 34 F and misting rain. The birds are flocking to my feeders, under the shelter of the hemlock tree's boughs: lovely aquamarine bluejays, livley and feisty black-capped tiny ones, and one grey squirrel who is also welcome there. The birds are serving as my holdiay decorations -- the house is otherwise without them, as I've been too preoccupied moving other people's mail to go get some and put them up!

I bow to your appreciation observation in the matter of Zoe's cleavage, except to say: Gad, I love that woman!

They say it will rain tomorrow. Hard to believe any amount of rain could make a dent in our volume of snow, but you never know. I think I should take a photo tomorrow morning, just in case. (It will be dark when I get home tonight, and too late.)

Just to cheer you up further:

The Canadian government (http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071219/COMMENTARY/10575140) warns that this winter is likely to be the coldest in 15 years.

Apparently, it's been a cold year all over.

From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
I expect it will be cold - though I don't necessarily trust the Government on the matter! Last year was notably icy, but not generally very cold. It's a lot easier to bear the cold if things don't keep melting and freezing over.

This year, it's not so much cold (yet) as just snowy. The whole world is behind fortress walls of snow.

And guess what - it's snowing again this afternoon.

Too bad snow isn't actually worth anything. We have so much to give away.

Yeah, I was wondering what the gov't's source was, but the article doesn't say.

You should up a picture of the snow.

Here, in Manhattan, it got much warmer for about 30 minutes this afternoon when the
sun came out. Then, by the time I was walking home, it had gone away again. But
of course, it's nothing like where you live.

One of the reasons I haven't taken a picture of the snow is that it's so dark out, I'm not sure how much it would show - moreover, all you would see anyway would be what looks like a heavy fog, though it would actually be snow falling. Tomorrow I'll take a photo if it's not falling so much.

The other problem is clicking the button with bulky gloves, or cold hands.

It hasn't been all that cold here, mostly. Just snowy.

My idea of snow here is using the "snow" setting on the camera to photograph decorations down at the park.

:)

Thanks for the reminder that it might be a good time to reread [livejournal.com profile] tammypierce's murder mystery on ice skates.

What on earth is a snow setting?

It's a setting on a digital camera, like fireworks or night.

No, it helps minimize glare from surrounding lights.
