Marksman
Long ago, in the distant future, the soldier who first taught Jack about guns had said: "When you shoot, make it real. Shoot to kill."
Bam.
In the Torchwood gun-room, a paper Weevil died.
Bam.
In Jack's imagination, he eliminated another Dalek.
Bam.
There is always another enemy coming, something savage, imperialistic. Always some creature lurking to creep up behind you in the dark.
Twirl. Bam!
There was no end to danger, endless killers ready to attack. Too many aliens thought humans easy prey. Cheap coinage, hate.
Bam!
... And too many problems where a gun is not the answer.
Bam.

Mmmm... I love him eliminating Daleks. Such a nice contrast with "exterminate" too.
I love this! Each word matters...

I love him eliminating Daleks.
As do I. I love the notion (maybe hinted at in "Captain Jack Harkness"?) that Daleks loom large in Jack's nightmares. And so they should, after "The Parting of the Ways".
I love this!
Thank you so much.

Date: 2007-01-31 08:47 pm (UTC)Hmm. Could be. My basic intent was that it was a pacifist touch - that Jack, who is so thoroughly a soldier and a fighter, has been enough influenced by the Doctor and has gone through enough psychological pain due to violence, that he sees its limitations as well as its (in his point of view) necessity. I certainly meant to imply an element of frustration, melancholia, even distress - which could be taken to be ultimately suicidal.
Glad you liked it!

Date: 2007-02-01 06:32 pm (UTC)... Which probably says something worrying about me, considering that he's all gunned up in this drabble.

Date: 2007-02-01 06:37 pm (UTC)Besides (-ahem-) I find Jack with a gun in his hand mighty appealing, myself.
Yeah, I'm a funny sort of pacifist!

Date: 2007-02-02 12:57 pm (UTC)I've always seen Jack's defence of the earth as a link back to the Doctor - that travelling with him instilled that sense of duty, which is kind of a burden but also the sense of purpose he was looking for.
Also Jack + gun = hot!!
I'm shallow, I know ;)

Date: 2007-02-02 01:41 pm (UTC)Yes, I agree. A sense of responsibility and protectiveness that often feels like "too much" but it's become part of him.
Also Jack + gun = hot!!
I couldn't agree more.
I'm shallow, I know ;)
Appreciation of beauty and talent is never shallow!
