I think that distinction is forgotten by a lot of people ... including most contemporary scientists. The common vision of a "goal" nowadays sounds like something you would score in sports, rather than a simple motivator.
I will admit that part of the difficulty is that I tend to think in puns, rather than linearly or logically. Much though I may admire Spock, I rather doubt that I could ever live up to that ideal.
I'm not sure whether I admire Spock. I like him. Love him, even, in a good episode. But admire? There's a lot of screwed-up-ness here, in my opinion. As far as I can see, Vulcans embrace logic by repressing emotions. If they're anything like humans (and they are), that can't be good.
