fajrdrako: ([Doctor Who] - Ten)

Every since I bought my slow cooker, I've been meaning to make soup before I go to bed and have it ready for when I go to work in the morning. Tonight is the first time I've done it - a lentil soup recipe I got online. Let's hope it turns out to be edible! Wish me luck.

I should have seasoned it more - it came out quite bland, which is what you get from lentils and rice in general - but it was really quite good. I plan to experiment more re ingredients and texture, but the technique worked well and I'm looking forward to trying something else.

If you have any recipes to recommend, I'd appreciate it!

I need to work on recipes and technique, but I was really quite pleased with my results this morning. I'm going to try again tomorrow.

The results weren't bad. It was rather bland - I need to experiment with some seasonings, and with texture - it came out more like porridge than soup. But it was really quite good - I had some for breakfast. I took it to work in my backpack and it was still hot when I arrived - despite being about an hour outside in cold and snowy weather. The insulation in my backpack must be better than I thought.

I think you can thin down a too-porridgy lentil soup the same way as you can a pea soup that's turned into pease porridge, just by adding enough extra liquid when you reheat it. You can also punch up the flavor at this stage by your choice of liquid. Depending on what's already in it, beer might do the trick, or tomato juice, or some kind of flavorful broth. A squeeze of lemon juice at the last minute is also a nice addition that can wake up a bland bowl.

Yes, any of those things will do it! I'm at work, but there are oddments of sauces (like soy sauce, for example) in the fridge here, which should do the job nicely.

Well, good luck then!

The result was not exactly a culinary masterpiece, but it wasn't bad. I will experiment with recipes and seasonings, and I'm really quite happy that it worked as well as it did.

Oh, well. Not everything you cook has to be a masterpiece, does it? :D Besides, first try. I'm sure you'll get better at it, too :D

No, though I'm the one who'll be eating it, so I keep hoping it will be delicious. I'll settle for 'edible'.

I'll know how to readjust tomorrow.

It's hard to go wrong with slow-cooked lentils, IMO (particularly with loads of garlic and cumin). How did it go?

Not bad. Now I've done it, I'll have some sense of how to experiement. Perhaps more water and fewere lentils and rice would be good, since it came out a sort of pasty consistency, not very soup- like. And bland, but it tasted good - I had some for breakfast. Altogether, a worthy experiment.
