After a lovely brunch at Von's, I went to Chapters with [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi and [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and got a book called Lost Civilizations: Rediscovering the Great Civilizations of the Past with my gift certificates. I got it because of its gorgeous pictures, and because its index had several cites I was unfamiliar with: Luoyang, Nemrut Dagh, Pagan and Philae. I realized afterwards that I'd seen Philae in an Imax movie about rafting down the Nile, but I hadn't remembered the name.

It's always a special treat to look at pictures of Karnac and Carnac, but many - most - all of the sites are breathtakingly beautiful. I hope something still stands of Persepoliz.

I thoroughly enjoyed the pictures of Nemrut Dagh, where the huge, eery stone head, broken and on the ground, made me think of Ozymandias.

Cool book!

"Philae" was the name of Amelia Peabody's ship she took down the Nile in _Crocodile On The Sandbank_.
