My real/adopted family motto is from the Grant clan - I have a Grant great-grandmother, is that legitimacy enough? - "Stand Fast", or "Stand Fast Craigellachie". Not that I'm particularly consistent or steadfast, it's a reminder to me to think of that as a goal.
Yeah. It's really the only roots I have. I mean, being Canadian is great, and it's a root of sorts, but it isn't a historical connection. Those Grants - they give me a sense of lineage going right back to the 9th century. And I feel I know them, because my mother had the set of china Thomas Grant brought from Scotland to Canada in 1820. My father trashed it when he moved, as far as I know, but it's a nice visual memory for me, connecting me to a bit of the past.
And you know my thing for history.
Like many Canadians, I'm a sort of genetic mix of all parts of the UK (including Northern Ireland) with bits and pieces of German and goodness knows what else - I don't really know where the Mennonite cousins came from. I'm no more Scottish than the rest of it, really.
The Grants are the only part of the family that made a story of it.
Well, if you want genetics and stories, my last name goes back to the tribes - first temple at the very least, right, and before if you buy Bible Old T - Levis and all :) And stories, there's lots, plus some good reason to hate the Romans. But I hate the Romans for stuff that happened very far from where my ancestors (that I know of) lived.
I just need something to feel connected to, I guess.
(Pause for many happy thoughts about Methos. Speaking of old names. Or old anything.)
I hate Roman culture and Roman imperialism and Roman crimes, but there are individual Romans I love, which is a weird sort of tightrope paradox. And sometimes I find myself sort of admiring the blatancy of their awfulness.
And loving individuals while hating their empire is not a paradox. Unless they were very active in helping out. Some of my best friends are Americans, right? ;)
I always think Americans and ancient Romans are very alike. Very organized in their imperialism, and similar in their view of the universe. Similarly in the middle ages, the Normans look like Americans to me.
I got that one on one of my fictional attempts. (Some version of Aral Vorkosigan's name.) I took it as more wry - might as well do anything, if that's the case!
