First Meeting

Friday night at the pub, as usual. "Talk to her," urged Daf, not for the first time.

"Don't know what to say."

"Rubbish! Go over there and start talking."

"Suppose she doesn't like me?"

"You'll never know till you try. You could start with 'hello'."

Rhys looked nervously at the girl with the bright, lively eyes. "Maybe I'll talk to her tomorrow."

"Coward!"

The girl was about to order another pint. Rhys went over. "Hi," he said, taking the plunge. "I'm Rhys, and you're gorgeous. Can I buy you a friendly drink?"

Her smile was enchanting. "I'm Gwen," she said.

;-] Next time I'm in Ottawa and I meet you for lunch, I'm going to say, "Hi, I'm Gayle, and you're incredible. Can I buy you a friendly poutine?"

LOL.

And you don't even have Daf to urge you on.

[I deleted an aborted attempt to answer this, having forgotten to change my LJ account back to what it should be. Oops.]

Deleted it? Well, I received it... and was wondering who the deuce "torchwoodgwen" was. heh

But -- who's Daf, eh?

Huh. I messed up the coding here so I'll post again. Don't want to make this a habit - double messages!

Daf is Rhys' best pal. He mentions him a few times in the show. I think we see him once - I forget which episode.

[livejournal.com profile] torchwoodgwen is my LJ for [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse fics about Gwen Cooper.

With a name like "Daf," I should have guessed -- mighty Welsh, it is. and, yes, I do remember the mentions.

"theatrical muse"? sounds interesting.

(band-aids still interfere with my typing! shift key is an issue, I see, but only for the right hand1)

I don't think I ever use the shift key with my right hand - for some reason, I only shift on the left.

I assume Daf is short for Dafydd, which is David, which is a classic and popular Welsh name because of St. David.

Yes, that was my thought. Have I told you of my neighbors the Griffiths?

No. Is one of them named David?

(this is going to be rough; I'm at the keyboard whose right-hand shift key does not work)

No, not in that family; but there are quite a few families around the area, and I'm sure one of them has a David! welsh people immigrated to the Johnstown area circa the 1830s, and my own ancestors were among them; cambria county celebrates st. david's day even now. but the spellings are mostly americanized!

It's odd, since I'm not remotely Christian, but I always get a kick out of Saint's days, especially when they are celebrated for nationalistic reasons. (And I'm not a nationalist, either!) Saint Jean-Baptiste is a big holiday in Quebec - many of my friends who work for the government get the day off - and Quebec isn't particularly Christian any more, either. It was also the patron saint of Pistoia, a town in Italy in the middle ages. Probably still is. I mean, it probably still exists and St. John the Baptist is probably still its patron saint.

It really isn't odd: this is a medieval thing, and you know how I love the middle ages.

The results of the 2007 Hugo Awards have been announced at Nippon 2007, the 65th World Science Fiction Convention, in Yokohama, Japan. The Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form went to The Girl in the Fireplace by Steven Moffat.

This is Moffat's second Hugo win, following from last year's win for The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. Other Doctor Who nominees in the category this year included Army of Ghosts/Doomsday by Russell T Davies and School Reunion by Toby Whithouse.

David Tennant and Patrick Stewart in the same play? My goodness! How can I get to England?

Yes, the tie-in between Love's Labours Lost and The Shakespeare Code is an amusing link.

Did you read the article about the DW hiatus above the DT Shakespeare blurb?:

Also, James Marsters had more to say about TW:

I read about the hiatus. I found myself wondering what the real reason is - the need to find a replacement for Russell T. Davies? The fact that everyone connected with it has been run ragged and needs a rest?

Love the Marsters article - I'm looking forward to seeing him all the more, if he might come back. That can only be good news.

Probably both, plus the UK is set to convert to HD in the next few years, which is an issue re: DW, because the visual effects require more work for HD broadcast, so they have to get those ducks in a row.

Frankly, I'm a bit miffed at fans who are blaming DT for the hiatus. The BBC wouldn't put their flagship show on hold solely for their lead actor, popular as he may be, when the franchise has a built-in recasting mechanism. No, I firmly believe DT, RTD, & Co. went this route, because it was mutually beneficial. I'm happy for DT. After all, Hamlet was his other dream role, and this arrangement allows him to have his banana cake with edible ball bearings and eat it, too. :)

I didn't know about the HD issue. Interesting.

I can't see David Tennant having much to do with this sort of decision. I think fans are blaming him because the media blamed him, and the media pointed a finger at him because he's the kind of name that will make people pick up a copy of something thinking, "Oh, look, here's an article about David Tennant." But actors don't have that kind of power, and off all the shows ever made, Doctor Who has proved it can continue and thrive with a new actor in the lead role. David Tennant is popular, yes, but he doesn't have the kind of power that can rearrange schedules. Few actors do, and it's usually a sign of the end of their career, because what producers what to hire someone who will try to tell them what to do?

And I'm delighted to hear Tennant will be in Hamlet. I only hope/wish I can see it. (What are the chances? Slim to nothing, but I can dream.)
