Computers: can't live without 'em, can't get 'em to work...

My computer is out of commission today due to a small but vicious war going on between WIndows and my H drive. Don't ask me to explain the problem; I can't. So I spent hours online today with my dear and good friend Sandi, who gave me lots of moral support and careful instructions, and in turns out to take a Very Long Time for my computer to do what it needs to do. (Hoping it won't fail me again in the end.)

So I'm at [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi's place watching the commentaries and extras on the new Serenity DVD and she let me use her computer to post this message.

I'm hoping to have my computer working again tomorrow. Really.

Now, back to Joss and Nathan.

Hope you have better luck with your Windows box than I have had with mine.

I feel like growling.

Stupid machine. Giving me grief.

I also have technical difficulties; I've recently bought a new computer and a new mini notebook; on Friday someone has build a small network and a connection to the internet. Then I noticed that the modem is much to hot - like an oven. Now I'm thinking the whole weekend about the damned modem and have no peace.

Yes - it's terrible when things that should work, don't. Make me feel a sense of betrayal. Especially when I've paid for the program or gadget or piece of hardware - !

*crosses fingers*

It has to be better than my experience of getting a new laptop, which went "it has Windows Vista Home . . . we can't possibly be having that - let me just install XP . . . oh dear, it's really not supposed to do that . . . "

Oh, no - ! I've heard the most horrendous stories about Vista! My sympathies.

My problem doesn't seem to be a bad one, just an annoying one. Or at least... I don't really know if it's significant or not. I hope it doesn't become worse. I can work around it. It annoys me that I need to.

Yeah, fingers crossed.

OYG. Vista seems, from what I have read in Linux fora, to be deliberately engineered so as to make it nearly impossible to install another o/s, either dual-booted or supplanting it. Not to mention being a ginormous resource hog.

You ain't seen NOTHING yet

What is even scarier is that those problems are just the tip of a very bulky and nasty iceberg.

You will find the following article (http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html) to be very bad news indeed ... which could be Good News for Linux, if it could get its act together and avoid pissing off its user base by tactics such as requiring every device driver to make its source code publicly available (which is what requiring the [Greater?] GPL generally means).

I'm not sure what that means - what the implications are, I mean. Why should source code not be publicly available?

A new Serenity DVD...? Hm?

Hope your computer is better soon!

I'm not sure exactly what the differences are - it has more commentary and extras.

I'm just going to stop worrying about what my computer is or isn't doing. It will basically work, so I don't need to sweat the details. Right? I have a problem; I can work around it, and I'm doing so.

There you go. Echoing my new favorite saying:
If you stumble, make it part of the dance.

One of these days (or months or years) I'll get a new computer. Meanwhile, this works - adequately.
