fajrdrako: ([Doctor Who] - Ten)
[personal profile] fajrdrako

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rivier, who posted to this lovely article from Times Online about Doctor Who, specifically the last couple of episodes and the excitement about the season's last episode. Such clock-watching, such antici-pation, such excitement in Trafalgar Square.

It’s quintessential to being British. says Caitlin Moran, in surge of patriotic Doctor Who fervour, while I scratch my head over some of her references. Bread and cheese I know, but who/what is Jolene? Who is Keyser Söze?

I agree with her about the comparison of seasons. Season 2 was heart-wrenching, but season 3 has a dynamic build that enthralls me in quite another way. It's perpetual motion. Not a roller coaster ride at all, more like climbing Everest at a run. Running, always running.

What Caitlin Moran doesn't mention, and which has filled my week with joy, is the sudden surge of fanfic triggered by the plotline, the appearance of the Master two weeks ago, and the complicated relationship possibilities. All those permutations of Doctor/Jack/Martha/Saxon/Lucy. For the first time in months, I have plenty to read.

I did like Moran's line, "The people working on it have a passion for it, unlike any other show on Earth." I think this is true, especially if you factor in the passion and excitement of the fans who are watching. I've never seen anything like it; a shared cultural experience that might more be compared to the coming of The Beatles than to Star Trek or other TV shows.

Keyser Soze is a character from an American film called The Usual Suspects. His identity is one of the biggest reveals in movie history, so I won't spoil it for you. I'm not reading this link 'til late because I don't want to be spoiled.

Keyser Söze

You have to see the movie The Usual Suspects to understand why that sentence is so funny.

I'm assuming "Jolene" refers to the band / song.

Right! Will do.

Keyser Soze is the mysterious, sinister character from the movie, The Usual Suspects. The question, "who is Keyser Soze" is the narrative trope of that movie. Which, if you haven't seen, is a must. Kevin Spacey and a bunch of others. No idea about Jolene.

I usually like Kevin Spacey. Jolene is an American band and a song.

Keyser Soze is the criminal mastermind that the plot of Usual Suspects revolves around. He's the bogeyman, someone that most people don't believe exists, capable of extreme ruthlessness and manipulation. To quote the film:

He is the Devil. You've never seen anyone like Keyser Soze in all your miserable life, you idiot. Keyser Soze. Do you at least understand that? Keyser Soze.
&
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist. And like that... he is gone.

So the idea of him playing a pantomime dame is just a little bit mind-bending!

(Also, I've just finished watching Last of the Time Lords - all I'm going to say is "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!")

I wonder if Martha will be back after the Christmas special? Hope so!

The Master and Lucy… OMG.

I hope so too. I'd hate to lose Martha.

Lucy was interesting. Was she the one with the ring at the end, do you think?

That looked to me like the hand of an older woman than Lucy.
Two theories:
a) The Master has reincarnated as the Mistress.
b) There is another Time-Lord/Lady out there: the Rani.

I don't think it's Lucy. I think one of those other theories is more likely.

Me too! I just showed "The Sound of Drums" to Sheila. She loved it. We're hoping we can see "The Last of the Time Lords" tonight - Eeeeeee!

Have you seen it?

It left me feeling somewhat stunned. Many surprises.

Noooooo. I stayed up last night so that I could start the process, but the "finished" file this morning was only 256 KB. ::fumes:: Am trying again. NOT feeling patient.

In other news, I showed my mum the very first episode of Slings & Arrows yesterday evening. Unfortunately we didn't have time for more than one episode and tho' I now adore Oliver's Dream, especially for its glimpses of a young Geoffrey and Ellen (Let's make a baby!"), the episode has an awful lot of setting-up to do and I kept worrying that my mum was finding it a bit slow. I think I enjoy rewatching stuff more either on my own or with people who I know already love it too! It's too nerve-wracking otherwise.

I had a slow download last night too, but I managed to ditch it and get a copy that Sheila and I could watch. It did mean staying up later than I'm used to - but Sheila's all for late nights.

So did your mother actually enjoy "Oliver's Dream"? You're right, a lot of it's set-up, especially set-up of characters.

Whether I enjoy things more on first viewing or second (or later), or whether I enjoy watching them with others, tends to depend on the show and the others, though I do enjoy watching things with other people - and don't often watch anything on my own - so this is why I keep inviting people over to watch shows. Then I get someone to discuss them with in person - a bonus.

She enjoyed Geoffrey's Return rather more, and is looking forward to watching the rest of the series. *g* I enjoyed it too - there was a bit more Geoffrey, which is always a Very Good Thing. And he was splendidly Mad when trying so hard to come across as perfectly sane and rational to the undertaker brothers during the discussion about removing Oliver's head and "rendering" it. *sigh* I love Geoffrey.

And Ellen - I'd forgotten that we see her in floods of tears in the Green Room (with the chamaeleon!) right after she comes face to face with Geoffrey for the first time in the corridor outside her dressing room. Oh Ellen!

Ellen is such fun. And yes, I loved the scene with the undertakers. In fact I love the role Oliver's skull plays in the whole series.

Apparently, the BBC will put out a press release regarding Martha's future on Monday. I don't have time to listen to it myself, but they also discuss Martha in the podcast for the ep, as well:

It will be interesting to hear what they say. I think now I was feeling over-secure in my sense of Martha's permanence. Just because I like her so much.... The ending of "Last of the Time Lords" didn't give me much hope that she would return as a companion, let alone that there would be a continuation of he relationship with the Doctor - whatever it might be.

Lis Sladen (Sarah) stayed on the show for 3 years; she was the longest serving regular companion. The others fell in the 1-2 year range. During Three's exile on Earth, there were "pseudo" companions among his UNIT collegues, apart from the regular companions, because he was stuck there.

It's painful, but none of them stay. They're designed to be Bond Girls/Men without the sex scenes for the ultimate loner hero..

Funny how I didn't mind seeing Rose go in the least, much as I loved Rose, because of the manner of her leaving. I don't feel the same sense of Martha's story having been told.

Or maybe I do. Maybe I'm just being greedy for more of her, because I liked her so much.

I think she may come back next series, but she's just out of the way for the Christmas special, which usually has special guest-stars.
