It’s quintessential to being British. says Caitlin Moran, in surge of patriotic Doctor Who fervour, while I scratch my head over some of her references. Bread and cheese I know, but who/what is Jolene? Who is Keyser Söze?
I agree with her about the comparison of seasons. Season 2 was heart-wrenching, but season 3 has a dynamic build that enthralls me in quite another way. It's perpetual motion. Not a roller coaster ride at all, more like climbing Everest at a run. Running, always running.
What Caitlin Moran doesn't mention, and which has filled my week with joy, is the sudden surge of fanfic triggered by the plotline, the appearance of the Master two weeks ago, and the complicated relationship possibilities. All those permutations of Doctor/Jack/Martha/Saxon/Lucy. For the first time in months, I have plenty to read.
I did like Moran's line, "The people working on it have a passion for it, unlike any other show on Earth." I think this is true, especially if you factor in the passion and excitement of the fans who are watching. I've never seen anything like it; a shared cultural experience that might more be compared to the coming of The Beatles than to Star Trek or other TV shows.

I'm assuming "Jolene" refers to the band / song.

Date: 2007-06-30 07:14 pm (UTC)He is the Devil. You've never seen anyone like Keyser Soze in all your miserable life, you idiot. Keyser Soze. Do you at least understand that? Keyser Soze.
&
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist. And like that... he is gone.
So the idea of him playing a pantomime dame is just a little bit mind-bending!
(Also, I've just finished watching Last of the Time Lords - all I'm going to say is "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!")

Date: 2007-07-01 02:43 pm (UTC)Lucy was interesting. Was she the one with the ring at the end, do you think?

Date: 2007-07-01 05:32 pm (UTC)Two theories:
a) The Master has reincarnated as the Mistress.
b) There is another Time-Lord/Lady out there: the Rani.

Date: 2007-07-01 09:06 pm (UTC)I don't think it's Lucy. I think one of those other theories is more likely.

Date: 2007-07-01 08:22 am (UTC)In other news, I showed my mum the very first episode of Slings & Arrows yesterday evening. Unfortunately we didn't have time for more than one episode and tho' I now adore Oliver's Dream, especially for its glimpses of a young Geoffrey and Ellen (Let's make a baby!"), the episode has an awful lot of setting-up to do and I kept worrying that my mum was finding it a bit slow. I think I enjoy rewatching stuff more either on my own or with people who I know already love it too! It's too nerve-wracking otherwise.

Date: 2007-07-01 02:35 pm (UTC)So did your mother actually enjoy "Oliver's Dream"? You're right, a lot of it's set-up, especially set-up of characters.
Whether I enjoy things more on first viewing or second (or later), or whether I enjoy watching them with others, tends to depend on the show and the others, though I do enjoy watching things with other people - and don't often watch anything on my own - so this is why I keep inviting people over to watch shows. Then I get someone to discuss them with in person - a bonus.

Date: 2007-07-01 09:02 pm (UTC)She enjoyed Geoffrey's Return rather more, and is looking forward to watching the rest of the series. *g* I enjoyed it too - there was a bit more Geoffrey, which is always a Very Good Thing. And he was splendidly Mad when trying so hard to come across as perfectly sane and rational to the undertaker brothers during the discussion about removing Oliver's head and "rendering" it. *sigh* I love Geoffrey.
And Ellen - I'd forgotten that we see her in floods of tears in the Green Room (with the chamaeleon!) right after she comes face to face with Geoffrey for the first time in the corridor outside her dressing room. Oh Ellen!

Date: 2007-07-01 03:43 pm (UTC)It's painful, but none of them stay. They're designed to be Bond Girls/Men without the sex scenes for the ultimate loner hero..
