Three Hundred

Dilios spoke of the the strength of three hundred men who loved freedom more than their lives, and held his audience captive with his words.

The traveller Harknos spoke of the courageous stand of the Time Lord and his companion Rose against the army of the monstrous Daleks. This tale was new to the Spartans, but the message was old. They cheered at the end of it.

Later, when the drinking started, Dilios clasped the stranger's hands. "True storytelling."

"I was not there, at the end."

"Neither was I," said Dilios.

They nodded in acknowledgement of what they had missed.

I can see this. Not just this scenario, but Jack drifting place to place, telling stories of Rose and the Doctor, and later, of his Torchwood teams and Martha and all the other people that he had met though his life.

Yes, that was my thought - I'm so glad you understand and agree. There are certain attributes I think of as being intrinsically 'what Jack is' - soldier, traveller, con man, lover, hero - and one of the most significant is storyteller. Just look at him - he's facing death, so he tells the story of his relationship with his executioners - tells it to an empty spaceship because there's no one else around to listen. And he tells stories to make a point. And because it's fun. And he makes an art of it every time.

Since 'storytelling' as a concept was really the whole point of 300, and the relationship between 'life' and 'story', I thought Jack fit into the story of the Spartans well - not just their story, but their telling of their story.

You got my attention with 300. You focussed my attention with Dilios. Wow! What a payoff. Nice story.

So glad you liked it! I'd really wanted to write Jack/Dilios slash but you can only do so much in 100 words. I also played with the idea of a Jack/Leonidas/Gorgo threesome story. Might even do it, if I find the time.

As it was, I thought it best to concentrate on the 'storytelling' aspect, and it struck me that the experiences of Jack and Dilios with regard to the major battle of their stories was parallel - though what Jack doesn't tell Dilios is that the reason he missed the climax and the resolution of the battle was that he'd already been killed in it.

Jack Harkness is like a gift to fanfic writers: he's canonically omnisexual, polyamorous, immortal, and a time-traveller. You can do just about anything with him, and you can pair him with anybody - over and above the people he's matched with in canon.

a Jack/Leonidas/Gorgo threesome story
That would be glorious (I'm going through a rather embarrassing Leonidas phase right now.) It would be lovely to hear their voices in your story. You have my complete support.

I like this guy's style! I just found out that CBC will be airing Torchwood starting in the fall. Knowing what I now know, I'm really looking forward to it. hehe.

Sounds good to me. I could of course make it just Jack/Leonidas but it seems a shame to leave Gorgo out.

Yay! I've heard it will start in Sept. but I don't know when.

I'm really looking forward to it. hehe.

It's an odd show, but worth it for the bi characters. If you watch series 1 Doctor Who (the Eccleston series, which I think I can lend you all of) you'll meet Captain Jack there.

Could you even try to leave Gorgo out? Would she allow it? I think not. Ooo! That set my antennae to waggling in delight.

I would be most grateful. I love backstory and I'd love an introduction to Doctor Who that is a little less startling than the one I had this week. heh.

Well... the Doctor isn't a particularly tame hero at the best of times. He ranges from manic to even more manic, with a few side trips to unpreidctable and dangerous. But if you have the good taste to like Christopher Eccleston already, it might be a better place to start. Work you up slowly to Tennant. If it takes at all.

Captain Jack Harkness first appears in series 1 (episode 9) so that series gives you an introduction to him, too.

I do enjoy Christopher Eccleston's work. I find him fascinating to look at and compelling as an actor. Tennant? Tennant spooked me. I don't like to be thought of as a coward, so I'll probably take a kick at the Tennant can again next Monday night. I promise nothing beyond that. Maybe Eccleston can save me.

I remember wanting to watch the (new) series when it first started but Mondays were a bad night. I'm excited about catching up with the story and starting Torchwood in September. I just hope TW isn't on Mondays!

He does save the world on a number of occasions. It might be possible for him to save you too. Who knows?

Tennant is bizarre but adorable - but maybe that's cause and effect - I find it hard to even imagine being spooked by him.

Can't vouch for when they'll put on Torchwood but I suspect they'll find a very strange time, like 2 am on a Wednesday or something. We shall see. It would be nice if they made it up-front and prime-time, like they did in England. It's showing now in Australia and I think that's prime time too.

If memory serves, CBC is advertising Torchwood as part of it's main "hey look at what we've got" line up. Very encouraging.... just not Mondays. Tuesdays are good; there's squat on TV Tuesday nights.

I'll stop going on now.

It is! I've heard a lot of Americans grouching about how 'they wouldn't put that on prime time TV here' but it looks as if they're going to air it in the US, too, hopefully without cutting it. I don't think the CBC is so prudish. Shouldn't be, anyway. But I'm irritated with them for waiting so long to show it, and then doing it out of order with regards to Doctor Who. No big deal, I guess, but annoying to a fan.

Oh nicely done! I was wondering how you'd managed a crossover for TW/300, though for a moment I thought a stray javelin may be involved somewhere ;)

Peace,

Heh - I think if one of those Spartans skewered Jack on a javelin, it wouldn't be a stray one!

No, I was just shamelessly taking advantage of Jack's time-travelling capabilities.

Glad you liked it.
