Captain's Hat
In his wardrobe, amidst the fashion debris of centuries, the Doctor chanced on a hat that he didn't immediately recognize. Militaristic, mid-twentieth century - this wasn't his.
It was Jack's.
Jack was wearing it when they rescued him from the bomb in the Chula ship. He left it behind, when the Controller's transmat beam grabbed him...when the Daleks killed him.
When everything went wrong.
A wartime captain's hat, sham variety, abandoned and kept by the TARDIS. Remnant of a bit of the Doctor's past which he'd brutally amputated, dismissed. Just a hat.
He hurt as if he were bleeding.

Date: 2007-05-23 02:58 pm (UTC)Doctor/Jack shipper in me is happy. Very happy. (Of course, I got really pissed off at Ten at the Utopia trailer. Some part of me is even cruelly satisfied that he's... ahem. Hurt. Of course... another one wants to offer him Jack on a platter and hug them both better.)

The platter and the hug will follow, if there's any kindness in the universe at all.

At the same, maybe that's what he needs to do to let go his past. If it helps you, it's also possible that the Doctor is smart enough to know that he might need to help the Captain let go, even if that means some pain now - for both of them.

Date: 2007-05-23 06:17 pm (UTC)Thank you! I was trying to portray the Doctor's feelings with sympathy but without softening the situation, without mitigating the blame - whatever its justification.
I begin to think that Jack and Ten is going to be very different. And that Jack's going to be hurt by this.
I don't know and can't really guess - and I love the uncertainty. I live in the hope and belief that whatever happens, the Doctor still cares for Jack - but they each have their share of darkness association with their relationship, whatever the Doctor's perspective on it may be. (I like to think I know Jack's perspective; haven't a clue what the Doctor's is at this point.)
maybe that's what he needs to do to let go his past.
In a way - Jack has to get past the point of eternally wondering why he ewas abandoned and why he is alive, a mystery which I think has kept him in pain for some time. But at the same time, I am a romantic, and I believe in the love between Jack and the Doctor, and I think Russell T. Davies does too. I don't think that relationship will simply dissolve or disappear.
I would be happy enough with a warm parting like that of the Doctor and Sarah Jane; though I hope for something less definitive. What I really hope for is an open-ended resumption of the ties between them, with Jack returning to his life (and to Torchwood) with the intention and the option of seeing the Doctor again in the indefinite future.
So I'm rooting for short-term pain and long-term resolution.
We shall see.
