As I was walking back to work after going to the bank just now, I was walking half a block behind two Roman soldiers. They had scarlet plumed helmets and breastplates and flappy leather skirts and greaves and sandals - and each had a gladius in his hand. They looked sort of like this, except their tunics were brown, not red.

I couldn't help remembering Captain Jack saying that an exuberant Roman soldier was his idea of a good time, and wondering if the Rift had opened again.

*dies laughing*

You should have followed them!

I wanted to follow them - but I had to go back to work. Captain Jack would concur: duty is a hard taskmaster!

What were they doing in Ottawa, one wonders?

OMG, I hope they turned into a dark alley somewhere and shagged each other blind.

I can only hope. They were kind of macho and attractive, in a young healthy male sort of way.

Or, you're being invaded.

Those Romans did get around.... I don't think Ottawa was ever part of the Roman Empire, though. Maybe it just took them a while to get around to us. We'll be renamed Ottavium and soon we'll have bread and circuses and sexy gladiators in our midst.

Also, soon you will lose your language, your gods, and your self-respect :)

Sorry. Political views stuck a couple of millennia ago. Rather anti-Roman. They gave us men in miniskirts, and took away pretty much everything else. I apologise for the outdated foaming at the mouth.

Yup, that Roman civilization came with a very high price tag - generally including everybody else being enslaved. You won't find me defending Roman civilization or culture, though their engineering was pretty good. I see only three bright spots in Roman history:

1. Julius Caesar
2. Marc Antony
3. Catullus

There may be someone or something else, but if there is, I've forgotten him/her/it.

They may have been re-enactors. We have some who show up to the local sf cons.

I was thinking that at the time, but when I told a friend about it that same evening, she said, "It's probably because there's a Senator's game on."

Duh. Of course

The whole city has Senators fever this week, and since I am sports-blind, I have been entirely ignoring it and doing my best to pretend it isn't happening. But obviously it had something to do with the game.

If there is now also a Rift under Ottawa, be on the lookout for Gwen and her green Converse shoes... coming in to buy theatre tickets as a front as she casually scouts out the OLT.

I'd say, hockey. Which reminds me, have you seen any black Senators t-shirts for a good price? I'd love to have a couple to wear at work!

Here's a fun difference between Canada's national capital, and America's: no way, nohow, could ANYBODY get away with walking down the sidewalk four blocks from the White House with a gladius in his hand! And here these fellows were, just that far from Parliament Hill. I love Canada.

If things are coming through the Rift - dibs on the pterodactyl!

I'd say, hockey.

I'd say you're right.

have you seen any black Senators t-shirts for a good price?

I've seen them being worn by people in the streets, but I haven't been into any stores to look at them. If I come across them, I'll let you know what they cost.

no way, nohow, could ANYBODY get away with walking down the sidewalk four blocks from the White House with a gladius in his hand!

Hee! I suspect they were plastic gladiuses (er, gladii) but they looked pretty cool.

I love Canada.

Yeah, me too.

It would fit right in beside the budgies.

Plastic or not is of no matter to Secret Service officers. Over-react first and let the reporters ask the questions at the press conference later.

I love Canada.

Yeah, me too.

Get rid of that Harper dude, and I'm in.

I wish someone would get rid of Harper. Maybe an election... any time soon?

Date: 2007-06-05 12:48 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] walkingowl.livejournal.com
At least you don't have to wait so long between elections... then again, if things are going their way, they do have up to five years before they have to call an election. Hm.

On the bright side, Hillary Clinton seems to be steaming full ahead, which I like. I see her as having served an eight-year apprenticeship in the Oval Office, and besides that, she's smart and resourceful. (And, um, really hot.)

Someone was telling me that the reason so many TV shows aren't starting till January is because they don't want to cut into fall election time.

Seems odd to me.

From: [identity profile] walkingowl.livejournal.com
Seems practical, to me. There will be debates and issues and panels and that, non-stop, come September next year. Ugh.

Hold on -- the election isn't until 2008. So much for that theory, eh?

I suppose the idea is that they're just changing all the schedules, holus bolus, for the one year in four the US has elections.

Or something.

Whatever it is, I'm sure I disapprove!

Date: 2007-06-06 08:25 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] walkingowl.livejournal.com
Yeah. Because, gee, everyone knows the world revolves around the US tv-viewing populations habits.

"Holus bolus"...?

Date: 2007-06-06 08:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com
Do Americans not say 'holus bolus'? Remember when Thomas and I in the apa were collecting rhyming word pairs beginning with h? That was one of them. Other sere higgledy-piggledy, hotshot, harum-scarum... um... and others.

Funny construction but I like it.

Re "holus bolus" - www.allwords.com has it as:
holus-bolus - adverb
1. Altogether; all at once.
Etymology: 19c: sham Latin, based on whole bolus.
