The Doctor Dances

Owen found Jack on the roof of the Millennium Centre. What the hell was he doing up there? Stargazing?

"I'm listening to the city," said Jack. "Listen. Up here, you can hear everything."

All Owen could hear was the fucking wind freezing his ears. Then he heard the distant music, the kind Diane loved.

"Dance with me," said Jack.

"No."

But Jack took his hands as if he hadn't heard, and they danced. Owen had not done this since he gave Diane the red dress.

Jack wasn't Diane.

The tears dried on Owen's face as he danced in Jack's arms.

I don't like Owen/Jack! I don't like Owen/Anyone! But this was stunningly done.

Well, frankly, I don't like Owen/Anyone either, but Owen does have good storytelling potential. And sometimes... sometimes I like writing against my own preferences, when there's a reason for it.

Thanks for the comment! I'm so glad you liked it despite the fact that I made Jack dance with Owen.

If it was anyone but Jack...

This works surprisingly well - 'sweet' and 'Owen' don't normally belong in the same thought without a negative, but I liked it a lot. Gentle and, yes, sweet, without being cloying.

The trick with several of these drabbles has been to find the right reference in Torchwood - once I have that, it writes itself. "Father's Day", for instance. I had to think of someone with a father. We've never seen fathers for any of the main characters, but Suzie had a father, so that worked fine. (Eugene had a father too, but seemed less conducive to further storytelling, especially if I wanted to feature Jack. Which I do so like to do.)

So here, unable to use the right sort of Doctor dancing, I fell back on the one doctor we do have on the Torchwood team, and voila!

If it was anyone but Jack...

Yes. It would have to be Jack, no one else.

'sweet' and 'Owen' don't normally belong in the same thought without a negative

Eeee! I would think not!

Gentle and, yes, sweet, without being cloying.

Thank you so much. Yes, that was the tone I was aiming for.

Yes! It could equally have been turned into an Owen/Diane story, too!

So it could have! And in a way, it was.
