I've been quilting this morning.

I was working on my story, but my friends (including Yolande from Montreal) came down for coffee and breakfast and talked about life, slash, and the universe. The birds enjoyed the company and got very lively, except of course Wisdom and the little one, who were totally quiet.

[livejournal.com profile] maboroshimaki is working on a Crazy Quilt and we were all impressed by her work. Impressed enough that I ran down to to the basement and dug a box of old fabric out of my locker - you know, all that stuff I've been meaning to do crafts with for years, but haven't touched? Patti gave me a lesson in how it's done, and I cut out dozens of little pieces and seven backing squares to work on at Sandi and Pat's campsite this afternoon, as a sort of private Canada Day project. Beulah was talking yesterday about bringing some quilting to the campsite too. Suddenly quilting is contagious!

I don't think Harry will be doing any quilting.

My quilt colours are a beautiful combination of eggshell-white, deep navy blue, and rust, in several patterns.

I discovered, deep in the box, the quilt cutting board and cutter that I'd bought long ago, when there was a seductive quilt shop just a few blocks from home. That was a lovely place: had some exquisite patterns and fabrics. Long gone now. The piece-cutter is handy, but my goodness it's sharp. I barely touched it to my hand and now I'm wearing a Harry Potter band-aid that is still leaking blood. I stopped cutting pieces when I saw it put a bloodstain on my fabric.

Okay, back to my story, and another kind of bloodstain: I'm just in the middle of rewriting a violent scene.

Yeah, we use them. There's my and Andrew's that we got when we got married and a single bed one I've had in storage for an age that Arielle is using.

I also have a double one that's been put out of rotation as it was worn pretty bare -- I had been using that one since I was about 13.

Next time you're here one of us will have to remember that you'd like to see them and I'll bring them down.

Oh, and there's the real "down and dirty ones" that are still better than anythign I could make, too, but that she considered just quick toss offs to use up her material. I've got one of those.

Yes, I want to see them - and I'll remember.

My grandmother's talent was in painting china and she did some really lovely plates and teacups with flowers on them. I think she probably quilted too, but I don't recall seeing the quilts.
