Every man builds his world in his own image. He has the power to choose, but no power to escape the necessity of choice. - Ayn Rand, 1905 - 1982

See, I may not approve of her philosophy on the whole, but she did have some great lines!

She did have a talent for making selfishness seem righteous if not holy, didn't she?

And grossly exaggerates the individual's powers of self-determination. You'd think, from that, that there was no such thing as "environment", "society" (was Thatcher, who said, "There is no such thing as society, only individuals and families" a Rand-ite?), or any kind of wider cultural influences. Many things in our world are ready-mades, with which we have to learn to live, or else react against them. But we don't put them there ourselves.

She also didn't specify what kind of choice she was thinking of; though if her message was, "Be careful about your choices, because they will have consequences," I think that is a good message. It's just that my choices would seldom be the same as hers!

Nor mine, I think, however tempting on occasion.

Next time you consider ruling the world - ?

You at least have the kind of artistic talent Rand likes in a hero!
