Over the past few days I have watched three episodes of Torchwood with [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi.

We often watch things together, but they are not enchanted with Doctor Who, as I am. And I was not into Stargate SG-1, their last fandom. So Torchwood wasn't much of a draw for them, and goodness knows, I wouldn't press any fandom on anyone. If I try too hard to watch someone else's fandom when I'm not really enjoying it, I end up hating it. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

I'd showed them "Captain Jack Harkness" because I knew they'd like it, and they did. Then they wanted to finish off the story with "End of Days". I didn't think they were in the least interested in seeing any more. Fair enough.

Then some time later I had, in an unguarded moment, said something to [livejournal.com profile] maaseru about Captain Jack and the Doctor's hand, and she found this fannish theme - amusing? interesting? fascinating in its impossible perversity? I'm sure my attempts to explain it just made things worse. She wanted to see 'the episode with the hand' so I showed her "Day One".

So far so good. [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi were impressed by the graphic sex. What, hadn't I explained adequately about what Torchwood was like? I guess not! They rather casually said they'd like to see another, so we watched "Cyberwoman", mostly just because I like it so much and they gave me the choice of episode. Tonight they wanted another, so we watched "Everything Changes". Yes, they are seeing the episodes completely out of order.

And I'm having a wonderful time seeing series one again. I'm hoping they'll want to see more.

I just got the first season of Torchwood on DVD - yay! - and I've invited friends over for a regular viewing party. We're seen the first two episode so far, and I'm hooked...!

Oh, how wonderful! I'm delighted to hear it - what good taste you and your friends have. I'm sort of envious of you all, getting to see it all for the first time!

You will learn to appreciate a good greatcoat, and stopwatches, and the power of the pterodactyl. Yes.

We're going to be good and watch 2 - 3 episodes a week. I've promised not to "watch ahead". Considering now is my busy season at work, that's not as hard a promise to make as it would be later on in the year...!

I *love* the pterodactyl! I take it s/he is a regular "guest"?

Good plan! At that rate, you'll be able to satisfy your desire for more without overdosing. And you might even get other things done, too.

I *love* the pterodactyl!

So do I!

To tell you the truth, we don't see as much of it as I would have liked. But it's nice to know it's there.

There's something wonderful about watching someone new discovering something you love. It's a bit like watching it for the first time all over again.

Well done corrupting... I mean enticing them in to the strange wonderful world of Torchwood!

Yes, thank you! I'm happy to just have another set of friends to watch it with... and people around who will understand my references to Captain Jack and Torchwood dialogue.

Yay for the Hand! I love how Goth Torchwood is without playing into the teenage!Goth cliches.

Torchwood manages to be a lot of things without playing to cliches. It's remarkable that way - and I love it!

Delighted to see this wonderful fandom is growing!
Thought this might be of interest:
Russell T Davies interview in today's Observer (http://observer.guardian.co.uk/business/story/0,,2036415,00.html).

Have my latest air-snail packages arrived yet?

we get A Midsummer Night's Dream and Twelfth Night a lot

I think [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi has seen the charm of Captain Jack, though whether it's his sarkiness or his smile that got her, I'm not sure. She is still deeply suspicious of Gwen. [livejournal.com profile] maaseru berates me if I forget to warn her when something scary is coming up.

Very interesting article! I was interested by the comment, re Doctor Who, "The show has survived the departures of both Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper, but it couldn't outlive its re-creator." Well, no one admires Russell T. Davies more than I do, but he isn't the only good television writer in the UK, surely. Of course it isn't just the writing - it's also the vision and the energy and the ability to communicate both - but I find it hard to believe that no one else could do the same, with their own different vision. You can't have the same person doing the same show for too long - it gets stale, he burns out. They'd be better off finding another writer with good ideas and a distinct vision anyway.

Why would Davies think writers were mystical? Obviously, only because he didn't know any!

No, I've had no packaages from you lately. Maybe today?

Sadly, it sure as hell feels like it at times. I watch no TV drama at all when Doctor Who and Torchwood are off-screen!

I posted 2 a couple of weeks ago: one with cuttings, and a couple of discs (a girls' package - Hedda Gabler, Rosa, and Anne Lister), and another, just a disc (wacky 1980s thriller with Templar-misuse. Poor things! - One to share with your gang, I think!).

I think Battlestar Galactica and Heroes are both remrkably well written, but they aren't from the UK. I confess: I bought season one of Spooks but haven't watched it much yet.

I look forward to your packages! They're probably languishing at a customs office somewhere.

They're only on digital/satellite TV here. I only have 4 terrestrial channels.

I look forward to your packages! They're probably languishing at a customs office somewhere.

Hope they arrive soon!

Yes. I am convinced that Canada Post is the slowest institution in the civilised world, and the uncivilised world as well.

So fingers crossed: the packages should arrive any time now.
