Battlestar Galactica: Unfinished Business

I can't believe the power of the writing in Battlestar Galactica. It has more story, more characterization, more depth and more impact before the credits than most shows get in a season.
Whoo. They make us wait so long to find out what has been happening with Kara and Lee, and they give us a whammy like that and we learn about the things we didn't even know where going on.
And that scene with Kara and Lee nose to nose at the ringside in the very beginning must be one of the hottest things I've seen on TV. They don't even touch. They don't have to.
This show is possessed of demons. How else could it attain this unheard-of quality?
Since it's so good, can someone tell my why it's Torchwood (flawed, clumsy, clever, crazy Torchwood) that has won my fannish passion, and my admiration of Battlestar Galactica, which can tie me in knots and spit me out without even trying, hasn't?
After watching Unfinished Business - brilliant title, brilliant theme, even more brilliant acting - I said to

I can't think of a better answer.
That scene where Lee learned she was married... jaw-dropping, punch-to-the-gut stuff, and so well presented. The build-up was so careful and so intricately paced. This show is dangerous it's so good.

Date: 2006-12-09 04:29 am (UTC)I am really, really, really NOT a Lee/Kara shipper. I like the idea better than I liked Ron/Hermione, but...they are BADBADBADBAD for each other.
Ironically, I could totally get behind Starbuck/Apollo on oldskool BSG.

Date: 2006-12-09 12:25 pm (UTC)Hmm. By that definition, I'm not a Lee/Kara shipper either since they are absolute poison for each other. Or she is for him, I'm not sure about the other way round. But I love seeing them together because they are gorgeous and incendiary and I have a thing for each of them. I don't want them to get together, I just want to see them together, because they make my head explode in the nicest sort of way.

I never saw the old BSG. I know one of them (Apollo?) was played by the actor who is Zarek; that's the sum of my knowledge there.
And one of my few problems with BSG now is that I see absolutely no slash potential.
My favourite character is Will Adama.
I agree with you on Ron/Hermione, on several counts.

Date: 2006-12-10 03:29 am (UTC)Well, that appeals, certainly. But they've never had much interaction at all, Lee is hooked dangerouslly on Starbuck and Helo loves Boomer deeply. I confess I wouldn't mind slashing Starbuck and Boomer, love 'em both, but - same problem.
Thanks for the tip to check out
Helo/Tyrol? I don't like Tyrol at all (I think I'm the only BSG fan who doesn't!) but that might be interesting.

Date: 2006-12-10 03:38 am (UTC)Yes, to all. But they did have one rather lovely scene earlier this season after Lee was back on board the Galactica, and it was very sweet. That seems to be enough for some people. It's still not quite enough for me, but I can occasionally buy a hot story if it's good and the mood is right. :-)

*gasp* You don't like the Chief? Horrors. ;-) I think, if memory serves, this one is sort of angry-messed-up-over-Sharon sex. I think.

Date: 2006-12-10 03:42 am (UTC)It's enough for me to read a story if it's well written. But to write one? I need more than that. Usually it's a plot/character point that will lure me into writing slash, something that catches my attention. Plausibility isn't enough. Tenuous plausibility is certainly not enough!

Incredible, isn't it? I think most of the BSG fans I've talked to have told me how much they like the Chief. I don't hate him. I just find him sort of unsympathetic and uninteresting, though he's had some good scenes.

Date: 2006-12-10 02:10 am (UTC)Actually, for a lot of people, that's part of the draw. Not including, of course, those folks writing mushy happily-ever-after stories, of course. ;-)
And of course, there's the flipside: them having an absolutely wonderful time together in "Colonial Day" and several other episodes. I'm not really a K/L shipper anymore, but I still have tendencies in that direction.

It's a fascinating relationship. I just don't see a resolution to it. Which is cool. Part of what makes it fascinating.

Date: 2006-12-10 03:41 am (UTC)Very. Even back in Season 1, when most of this fracked-up-ness was still in the future, considering their situation. But some people will go there anyway.

Yup! Very fascinating. At the moment, though, I really just want for them to be friends again, and forget the lovers thing. At least until Kara can possibly get her head on straight, which of course may be never.

Date: 2006-12-10 03:44 am (UTC)I guess I could get my head around it as a really unlikely AU. It still sounds out of character - if they weren't so fracked up they wouldn't be them.

I like their interaction. It keeps surprising me. I like the way they work together.

I couldn't even predict. And I love it that I can't predict.
