The Magic Circle
by Edward Burne-Jones

[livejournal.com profile] namastenancy and I made a pact to post beautiful art between now and the new year. This is my choice of the day; I was going to post Burne-Jones' "King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid", an old favourite, but I came across this picture (unfamiliar to me) and decided to substitute it for its mysterious, evocative qualities. Not only is this by one of my favourite artists, it combines many of my favourite things - trees, a boat, water, the colour blue; a sense of inner depths. I'd love to know what the title means, and in what context Burne-Jones painted it.

Way to go. You have now just inspired me to make a post about Nicholas Roerich. *sigh*

Oh, I love that--the use of arc, the blue and the complementary shades, the mood. yummy!

I am not a huge fan of B-J, but one day, a consumptive teenaged insurance clerk and his big sister turned up on his doorstep, to show him some drawings. He encouraged the boy to become an artist... So for that I am grateful!

B-J was disapproving of him later, though - his work was too highly sexualised for his liking.

I think they had very different ideas of what should be in art - not the artistic expression per se, but the kind of content and message that art should portray.

During the Boston WorldCon, ze spouse & I took a tour of the Trinity Church in Boston. They had some exquisite stained-glass by Burne-Jones, with lots of blue. You would've loved it!

Oh my goodness! I already have a number of reasons for wanting to go to Boston again - you've just added another.

There are also the Museums of Dirt and Bad Art. Iirc, the Museum of Dirt is available by appointment only. My spouse was disappointed to have missed them when we were there, but then, he's perverse like that. ;)
