My two new little feathered guys now have names. World, meet Phoenix (the green one) and Longshot (the blue one).

I'm hoping these names will be good omens for their health: in the X-Men comics, Phoenix has a habit of overcoming death, and Longshot is consistently lucky.

And these are characters I have always loved.

I was sorry to hear that your young budgie had died. Re teflon, we have had budgies for many years and teflon pans. No problems ever.

You were lucky, I guess. Or perhaps Teflon is being made in such a way to be more toxic than it used to be? I don't know what the difference is, since I have had budgies for years without this being a problem. Maybe because I don't usually overheat my pots. In any case, I just don't want it to happen again.

The overheating is the key issue. Also, ventilation/size of rooms.
The fact it was winter meant you couldn't have opened the windows to let the fumes out without risking small frozen birds, which would have been equally tragic.

Yes, I think was the particular combination of overheated Teflon and closed windows. A combination I will try never to replicate.

Just so they don't get too cold, I've moved the cages to the opposite end of the room from the windows - so the birds are directly behind me when I type at my computer now.

...And can doubtless read over your shoulder and comment chirpily!

I have no doubt they will do that at every opportunity. Budgies have comments on everything!

They currently seem happy and content, though quite. They were napping. So was I. It was all very cosy and companionable.

(Unlike the rather noisy times when I want to nap and they don't!)

Aw! That sounds lovely! Being all cosy with cosy, napping birdlets!
I am so thrilled they've settled in well! My parents send love, too: I've been keeping them up to date on the budgie-saga, because they too know how loveable and special these tiny creatures are.

(Tried to phone again - but anyhow - just good wishes and plentiful cheeps to you and them! Will be off south on Wednesday.)

Being all cosy with cosy, napping birdlets!

It's a sleepy sort of Sunday.

My parents send love, too

I passed that on and got a three-way inquisitive stare that no doubt means "thanks and love back to them".

Tried to phone again

I got your message - I went to have supper with [livejournal.com profile] maaseru and [livejournal.com profile] maaboroshi. Thanks, it was nice of you to call. Have a wonderful Christmas break!

Also while I was out, I got a nice call from Sandi to see how the new birds were. I think she's feeling like an aunt or godmother, worrying about the little guys.

I think, after all the ups and downs we've shared on LJ, a lot of us have invested emotionally in budgiedom with you: your little guys have a whole tribe (flock?) of virtual aunties wishing them well.

This makes them truly wealthy as the measures of budgie life goes. They are now chirping behind me, all of them - just waiting to wake up properly for the day and probably wondering why I haven't started my morning exercises yet.

Aw! Sweeties! How old do the new birds seem to be?

They seem young, but not as young as Remy was. They are fairly coordinated but quite inexperienced.

Poor little Remy was still too much of a nestling, so this is a good sign.
Co-ordinated, but still wide-eyed and curious, then?

Yes, definitely wide-eyed and curious, and a little overwhelmed by everything around them. We haven't determined whether they enjoy "Torchwood" yet but I'm working on it. They do seem to like my taste in Christmas music.

I think it's a comfort that they have each other; they sit shoulder to shoulder quite a bit, for mutual strength and courage.

Excellent! I'm sure you'll soon have them trained in fandom!
It's cute when birds snuggle up together on a perch!

Birds are so cute when they're affectionate. Like dogs, they're so warm and open in their affections, and quite ready to snap if they think you're out of line. Honesty in reaction! I love it.

Now I'm hearing the song "Tennessee Birdwalk" in my head.

Welcome to the new birdies!
