D is for Desires...
Dec. 10th, 2006 03:38 pmOkay, then. Ten things I like beginning with a D:
1. The Endless. No, the word "Endless" does not begin with a D, but their names do: Death, Dream, Delirium, Despair, Desire, Destiny and the missing brother, whose name I will not utter in case it's a spoiler for someone who hasn't yet read The Sandman by Neil Gaiman.
2. Dorothy Dunnett, my favourite writer.
3. Doctor Who.
4. Dancing.
5. Drama. Not just on stage - though I do love plays - but a sense of drama in real life, in literature, in anything. A convergence of concept, passion, and personality.
6. Doors, both as objects and concepts. They tend to look interesting, to be the focal point of the facade of any building. But more than that: they symbolize both connection and separation, connecting the inside to the outside and also keeping them apart, but making it possible to pass from the one state to the other. Doors are very mystical, yin/yang things, each one both an entrance and an exit.
7. Dogs. My favourite animal. The picture here is of the best dog I ever knew.
8. Dragons. Interesting mythical creatures. My Chinese astrological sign is the dragon, and I'm fond of some dragons of fiction: Smaug (the best character in The Hobbit), Mnementh (F'lar's Bronze), and the dragon whose name I forget in The One-Winged Dragon.
9. Decay. I like decay in the same way I like chaos. I like the notion of everything changing; I cities like Venice and New York where there has been great beauty and then decay overlaid on it, so there's a double message, lichen on the statues, the hard lines of stones worn down to smoothness or weathered to pox; a lingering sense of history so you can imagine the past - when it was glorious over another level of decay - or the distant future, when we will have decayed under the lustre of a new reality.
10. Duality. That seems to be a theme in my life. Insides and outsides, newness and oldness. Reality and imagination. Bisexuality is in a sense a double sexual orientation. Drama combines the duality of illusion, imagination masquerading as reality. Shiva's dance of life and death, creation and destruction.
My goodness, this exercise was actually rather difficult. But the challenge made it fun. Thanks,
Anybody else want a letter?

Date: 2006-12-10 10:40 pm (UTC)come on, I'll have an other go, my hand is in the scrabblebag, we have plastic tiles at home, with on one side the letter and the other a round hole, don't know why, for better grip perhaps...? My mind is racing a bit, thinking of how when I was hypomanic sensitive input like that, was so much more intense. I could just stroke a bench, warmed by the rays of the sun and get exstatic. aah, bygone joys. A letter, but obviously not the R.
Oh BTW I quite like attempts to overcome thinking in duality. It seems so natural, of course there are two, man woman, light dark, good bad. Sheeesh, swirling between the opposite options, slaloming your way, looking at those who try a vantage point above the whole mess.
(ah pardon me for irregular use of this replyspace with random thoughts. I like your doors and used to be very frightened of dogs but for some reason the medication I take seems to have dampened that fear.)

I like attempts to overcome thinking in duality as well. Unity? Multiplicity? Also fun. But maybe not quite as easily illustrated by doors.
Random thoughts are fun. I love hearing your random thoughts.
I'm glad you aren't as afraid of dogs as you used to be.

Date: 2006-12-11 12:34 am (UTC)Re sleep and death: that's sheer Shelley.... Though with Neil Gaiman characters in mind (under the initial D) that should be "Death and her brother Sleep".
I've been staying up to midnight too much lately, really need to go to bed early tonight to get up early tomorrow. But how I'd love to stay up late writing!
As for timelines - they're such fun to play with! But it's easier with fiction than in reality.

PS
Date: 2006-12-11 12:18 am (UTC)I've just rewatched The Christmas Invasion, with my mum, and much as I love and enjoy Ten, it's Nine who owns my heart.
In other news, VM has taken over my life. And, like a good fangirl, I've fallen for Logan Echolls. I'm nothing if not predictable when it comes to fictional boyfriends - the ones who conceal deep and troubled behind a facade of obnoxiousness/arrogance get me every time. Heh.
Re: PS
Date: 2006-12-11 12:31 am (UTC)Well, yes. Of course! (g)
much as I love and enjoy Ten, it's Nine who owns my heart.
I agree absolutely.
VM has taken over my life.
Hee. My fault. I am so proud.
like a good fangirl, I've fallen for Logan Echolls.
Well, I certainly did!
the ones who conceal deep and troubled behind a facade of obnoxiousness/arrogance get me every time.
And Logan is just so beautifully heartbreaking! Though the thing that made me love him initially was the messages he put on his telephone answering machine - nothing to do with the bad boy image or his inner pain.
So how much of VM have you watched? Are you up to season 3 yet?

Credit where credit's due. *g* I love all the characters - even Duncan, who I seem to remember you're not too keen on. Early s1 Duncan breaks my heart - he tries so hard to come off the antidepressants, in spite of the nausea and the dreams (of V!), but being visited by his dead sister, complete with perky attitude and gorey head wound, is just too much for him. And while I love Logan now, on first watch I hadn't warmed to him this early in the series, so the rewatch is extra fun. And I should mention Veronica herself. And Keith Mars. Oh, and Weevil!
Thanks again for the cds. 14 episodes were the perfect number - enough to get me hooked and to leave me desperate for more. :)
Re: PS
Date: 2006-12-12 04:09 pm (UTC)I discovered Veronica Mars at the beginning of summer reruns after first season - and had a chance to watch first season over again before the second season began. Then I saw each episode several times. This year, with third season, I've only seen each episode once because I keep running out of time, what with Torchwood and Doctor Who still being fannish preoccupations, and too much to read, too much to write.
I love all the characters - even Duncan, who I seem to remember you're not too keen on.
No. It was partly that he was a rival to Logan - I was fearfully afraid he would take her away from Logan, and I didn't think I could bear that.
And while I love Logan now, on first watch I hadn't warmed to him this early in the series, so the rewatch is extra fun.
Yes, exactly. Then you watch again and you see all the brilliant Loganisms you missed the implications of before. It'd like reading Dunnett, where the second time around is like a different story because you know what you didn't know before.
I should mention Veronica herself.
Isn't she wonderful? She has raised the bar for female heroic leads. She makes so many others look tame in personality and intellect.
Keith Mars
He's utterly wonderful.
Oh, and Weevil!
I adore Weevil. That scene where Lamb arrested him before he could write his high school exams - that was heartbreaking!
I'm glad the 14 CDs were effective. I hope I soon have the technology to burn DVDs and other clever tricks. It will make this sort of thing easier.

Duality is always a mystery and always interesting, I think doors could also symbolize dualism.

Date: 2006-12-11 02:09 pm (UTC)Ahh, he was. Smart, too.
I imagined you were brunette
My hair colour tends to chang depending on season and my age. I regularly went from dark-blonde to brunette through my childhood and teens. These days it's naturally a sort of brown/grey and every six weeks I play with another colour. Sort of auburn at the moment. I want to go for blue streaks but the idea makes my hairdresser just laugh and my friends forbid it. I can't think why.
I'm surprised how good looking you are!
Blush. Thank you. Keep in mind that most of those pictures are old. I like to think I look sort of the same now, just older and plumper.

Date: 2006-12-11 05:39 pm (UTC)I'm a mousey brunette (my mother euphemised it as 'mink' when I was a child, but essentially 'small brown furry animal' colour) by nature, now greying slightly; however, I prefer to be an unnatural redhead! I started this c. 1985 in tribute to dearest Aubrey, plus the fact I am simply not mousey by nature! I currently use Masria Rouge Ardent henna.

It would match the budgies, however!

It would. That could not be a bad thing.
