From today's news: MPs voted 175-123 on Thursday against a Conservative motion calling for the government to introduce legislation restoring the traditional definition of marriage.

The homophobes are bound to raise the issue again but I'd like to believe that Canadians will continue to be intelligent about the issue.

For the moment, I am relieved.

Yes - let's just hope they continue to be sensible!

Yes! Good for them! :) Good for you Canadians! Good for one step forward for the world, as a whole.

Yes, if only they can stand firm and keep themselves to this as the status quo - there are so many forces to work against it, and the issue will be raised again by those who don't think it's the way things should be. I hope that with time, it will come to seem normal to more and more people, and the issue will cease to be an issue.

Meanwhile here in Scotland, yesterday same-sex and unmarried couples got the right to adopt as couples.

Cool! Good for both our countries!

It was already possible for a gay person to adopt as an individual, but if s/he died, the surviving partner had no parental rights - the same with unmarried straight couples.

the surviving partner had no parental rights

So unfair!

As I understand it, the current Canadian laws give same-sex married couples exactly the same rights as a heterosexual married couple, as a matter of human rights. As long as the Conservatives don't succeed in mucking this up, we're okay!

Some quick thoughts:

For some reason, my MP contrived to be unable to be in the House for the vote. Not that his stated intent of a "yes" vote would've counted for much, thankfully, given the results.

One should give thanks for those Conservatives who voted rightly on this one. I believe the Citizen posted a list(which is how I knew to write the first point above) of who voted how.

Glad to see you breathing easier.

Hmm. I hope he was doing something important.

Not that his stated intent of a "yes" vote would've counted for much, thankfully, given the results.

Thankfully!

Excellent! I might write to my MP - and/or to the Citizen.

Glad to see you breathing easier.

For the moment! (g) Not that I intend to marry any women, you understand, but I think the law is important as a matter of equal rights.

I had faith that gay marriage was here to stay, but I was concerned when I heard they wanted to reopen the issue. I'm so glad it will stand. Thanks for pointing this out.

You're welcome! I think it's an important issue.

And it really goes without saying, but that's a great icon!

You know, at first glance, "conservative motion" looked like "conservative moron." Oh, the insights of myopia! ;)

LOL. I sometimes confuse politicians with morons myself. Actually, on a regular basis.
