From The Friday Five:

1. Is your hair naturally curly, wavy, or straight? Long or short?

Straighter than straight. Fine and straight. Currently short, but over the years I've worn it long (almost to my waist) and short (almost a crew cut) and everything in between. I've never used Lex's hairstyle, though.

2. How has your hair changed over your lifetime?

It grows until I cut it.

Besides that, it started out fairly fair - my mother used to say the highlights were gold, and I went blonde in the summer, though I suppose my normal colour was light brown. In the last decade or two it's been darker, and now the brown is is turning into pepper-and-salt grey. I keep saying I'm going to dye it purple or blue and my friends keep talking me out of it. Spoilsports.

3. How do your normally wear your hair?

As simply as possible. It won't hold a barrett or bobby pin or rubber band, or braids or pony tails. It will take a perm, but not very well - it tends to go frizzy, and besides, perms are expensive. So I get it cut so it's tidy-looking and leave it alone.

4. If you could change your hair this minute, what would it look like?

I'd have it streaked: copper and black highlights.

5. Ever had a hair disaster? What happened?

No. Never. Every once in a while I want to do something radical with my hair, and usually the hairstylist gets very nervous about it, but I like a radical change. My results with a perm haven't been very successful but they weren't disasters. I guess the worse that has ever happened.... A while ago I dyed my hair but the colour was so like my normal colour that no one noticed. (Blue. It has to be blue.)

1. Ditto straight and fine. Short - what else can I do, except wear a wig?
2. It turned gray/white and half of it disappeared once I became Officially Old.
3. Short & simple.
4. It'd be several inches longer, naturally thick, "normal" hair, and be a rich auburn.
5. Oh, yes... Very old perm growing out, only left on ends, very porous. Used shampoo-in hair color, light ash brown, left on for the recommended time. Result: Hair the color of eggplant - waaaay before anyone would do it on purpose. And of course, because I wanted it too, it wouldn't fade....

Eggplant - hee! It sounds adorable. What did you do - put on a wig? A scarf? A bathing cap? Hide indoors? Brazen it out? Set a new style?

It actually went on to further disaster. Tried to brave it out for a week or two and decided noooo, better try and get it fixed, professionally...from people who know what they're doing (hah!). Went to a shop near my place. Owner wasn't supervising new employee (and presumably new graduate!)closely enough. I had distinctly tri-colored hair when she was through. I was in tears. Shop owner then did her own fix (I was in the shop for more than 4 hours...), and to the casual naked eye I had one color again...but it was really still three colors if you looked closely (four if you counted the gray), my hair remained completely FRIED for months, and it took nearly a year to get back to one color and looking decent....

Ooh, what an awful horror story! I don't know what the moral is - how do you prevent that kind of mess? You have to trust your hairdresser. I'm glad you survived without murdering anyone.

Well, one solution is not to color your hair any more...and since I've accomplished that... Over the years, though, I've learned that the adage "you get what you pay for" is 90% true as far as hairdressers. If you go to a cheap shop, you'll get screwed, one way or another.... You can still be badly done by at an expensive shop (don't I know it...), but the chances are much less.

Do what - answer the questions, or dye your hair blue?
