Gleanings from the Torchwood web page...
Nov. 29th, 2006 11:37 pmI really enjoyed this message from Toshiko to her aunt on the Torchwood web page - spoilers in it for Greeks Bearing Gifts.
Now, if we take the website as canon (and I would) it's interesting that Ianto read this and showed it to Jack. I take it that Ianto has translation software that did a good job, rather than that he reads Japanese himself? Or does he?
On reflection, I think he probably does speak Japanese. Smart boy, Ianto.
My favourite line isn't about Mary or the Greeks plot. It's this part: Last time I saw you, you were so busy giving me soup recipes, I never got a chance to tell you I worked for a secret organisation dedicated to saving the Earth from alien threats, did I?

Date: 2006-11-30 09:04 am (UTC)On another note, have you read this DW fanfic (http://www.tapestryofstars.com/royce/docs/TeaAndSympathy.pdf)? It's by Royce from the LMB list; I'm alternating "Oo :(" with *giggle* and *snort*... I have sufficient amounts of DW in my system to appreciate it; I hope you like it...

Thanks for sending the story link - I'm printing it to read it.

Date: 2006-11-30 01:39 pm (UTC)Absolutely. It's just that she seemed more... resolute in the end of the episode; and also felt more guilty than grieving, to my eyes. But I guess these will oscillate until some more powerful emotion takes over Tosh... or she just goes on.
Re the story - I've been reading a lot of Royce's work over at the Terinu section (although it's good if one reads the original comics first, then his fanfic, and that in order of writing). Now he's gone and done a book, and I think it's the last straw and I'll be applying for a credit card next - just too much stuff I want to buy, and it doesnt't work without a CC and with PayPal not available in Bulgaria... Sigh. Mumble-mumble...

I have a credit card and mostly use it for online purchases. Which I must stop doing or I'll never get it paid off.

Date: 2006-11-30 01:58 pm (UTC)- there are a whole lot of Bujold books I'd like to own in English, all fair and square (owning them in Bulgarian on paper and ahem... acquiring them in other ways is just not the same).
- there is now Royce's book, which I'd love to get (probably in PDF to start with, save a tree... until a more final version is reached).
- there are Torchwood DVD's coming - no comment necessary.
For the books and the DVD I can try for shipment from the UK or perhaps Germany somehow.
You see, small things like that. Fannish. The normal things I usually spend a lot of money on I can get without going online. But some stuff...
Oh, also I could try for gifts to people abroad.
Actually, if I put my mind to it, I'll probably find a lot of things to shop for online. But some things I do really want.

Date: 2006-11-30 02:14 pm (UTC)Yes. It's scary. Not just shipping and handling here but import taxes and money exchange. If a book on amazon.com says $10 I figure it'll be at least $20 Cdn by the time it gets to me, maybe $30. Sometimes I'm luckier but it's good disincentive to ordering from the States. And with the UK it's worse, and takes longer, but oooh that seductive "Doctor Who" merchandise they have - ! And books that just don't exist here. Sigh.
Torchwood DVDs. Yes. Irresistible.
I could try for gifts to people abroad.
I was thinking that too.
